Quantum engineering is an exciting emerging field at the interface between quantum physics and electrical engineering. After more than 100 years of research in quantum physics, knowledge has developed to the point where technical use on an industrial scale is possible. We are at the beginning of a new industrial sector: quantum technologies. Quantum technologies aim to surpass classical engineering approaches in the fields of sensor and measurement technology and communication as well as in computing technology.
The aim of our Master's programme is to
- provide a comprehensive education and hands-on research in quantum engineering and relative miniaturisation methods;
- prepare students to design, realise and test quantum systems for quantum enabled sensing, communication, computing and navigation; and
- train the next generation of scientists in the interdisciplinary field of quantum technologies.

Course organisation
The first two semesters of the programme are dedicated to adaptation courses as well as core lectures and lab courses in the fields of quantum physics and electrical engineering science.
During the third semester, students have the possibility to choose between various options:
- take additional courses to deepen knowledge of a specific area
- spend a semester abroad
- carry out an internship at a company or research institution
The final semester is reserved for the six-month Master's thesis.

Academic admission requirements
1. a Bachelor's degree or at least an equivalent degree in physics, electrical engineering, nanotechnology, quantum technology or aerospace engineering or in a related or subject-specific programme at the level of at least three years of study, evidenced either by
a) an academic final examination with a Bachelor's degree with an overall grade of 2.7 or better, or if no degree has yet been awarded,
b) previous study and examination achievements with an average grade of 2.7 or better, as well as
2. basic knowledge and competences, proven by at least 15 ECTS credits in mathematics (analysis, linear algebra, differential equations), at least 100 ECTS credits from the fields of physics and electrical engineering,
3. the ability to conduct independent scientific work, demonstrated in particular by a thesis or comparable achievement corresponding to 10 ECTS credits from a field in physics or electrical engineering,
4. in the case of applicants who have a higher education degree from a country that is not a member of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), a selection interview, and
5. adequate English language skills according to § 3 (2) of the applicable version of the Statutes on the required language skills for studying at Ulm University.
Language requirements
An internationally recognised certification of English language proficiency is required from all applicants, except for native speakers of English.
Applicants must demonstrate this proficiency, which corresponds to the B2 language level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), by means of one of the following language certificates:
- 5.5 points or more in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); if both an IELTS score and a CEFR level are indicated, the higher language level will be recognised
- First Certificate in English (FCE), Certificate in English Language Skills (CELS), Vantage or Business English Certificate (BEC), Vantage Cambridge exam, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL, Cambridge University)
- 400 (listening), 385 (reading), 160 (speaking) and 150 (writing) points or more in the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC)
- 72 points or more in the Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based (TOEFL iBT)

Possibility of finding part-time employment
Student assistant jobs are regularly offered by institutes in all faculties as well as in the central administration. Student assistants help with the preparation and execution of tutorials, work on research projects, or help with administrative jobs. Students admitted to the programme have the opportunity to have a room reserved in one of the student residences. The university has several residences (all within a bus ride or walking distance from campus) featuring fully furnished rooms for one person and a kitchen and bathroom that are shared with a few other students.
