Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) or Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP), respectively

Courses at TU Ilmenau are held in German. Participants can choose to write their Master's theses in German or English.

Double-degree programme with UTM: Courses in Malaysia are conducted in English, and the Master's thesis has to be written in English.

Double-degree programme with PUCP: Courses in Peru will be conducted in Spanish; the language of the Master's thesis will be determined by the examination boards of both universities.

Biomedical engineering is technology for life. It directly affects human health. Together with medical partners, it develops new methods for the detection and treatment of diseases and implements them in medical technology.
The TU Ilmenau has a long and successful tradition in the field of biomedical engineering. Already in the year of 1953, the Institute of Electromedical and Radiological Engineering was established at the former "Hochschule für Elektrotechnik" (HfE), which was the first university institute in Europe that introduced an on-campus programme of Biomedical Engineering.
Key aspects of the Master's programme include the following:

Winter semester

• Application period for students with certificates from EU/EEA countries, Switzerland, or the UK: 16 April – 15 September

Summer semester

• Application period for students with certificates from non-EU/EEA countries: 1 August – 15 November
• Application period for students with certificates from EU/EEA countries, Switzerland, or the UK: 16 October – 15 March

This course offers students the opportunity to obtain a double degree through a joint programme of either the universities of TU Ilmenau (TUIL) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) or TUIL and Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú (PUCP).

Students start their Bachelor's education at their home university and then continue it at the partner university. The guidelines for students starting at TUIL are described here. For students affiliated with UTM or PUCP, the guidelines can be found at www.utm.my or www.pucp.edu.pe, respectively.

Students start their Master's education with one semester or two semesters at TU Ilmenau. The by-laws can be found in the course regulations ("Studienordnung"). The participants of the double-degree programme will be chosen by a joint commission consisting of members from both universities. The decision is based on the students' state of preparation.

Double-degree programme with UTM: In the short version of the exchange, either the second or the third semester is spent abroad. In the long version, both the second and third semesters are studied abroad. The latter version also involves completing the Master's thesis abroad.

Double-degree programme with PUCP: The exchange begins after the second semester, including the completion of 12 Peruvian credits and the commencement of the Master's thesis at PUCP.

The topic for the Master's thesis is determined jointly with the supervisors at UTM or PUCP, respectively, and TUIL. The Master's thesis will be jointly supervised and assessed by one supervisor from each university.

The credits are transferred according to the EU-ASEAN Credit Transfer System (EACTS). The transfer tables are part of the German by-laws: "Master-Prüfungsordnung für den Studiengang Biomedizinische Technik (MPO-BB)". Graduates receive a Master of Engineering degree at UTM or a Magíster degree at PUCP and a Master of Science degree (Biomedical Engineering) at TUIL.

First semester:

• Biosignal Processing
• Image Processing in Medicine
• Measurement and Diagnostic Technology
• Imaging Systems
• Hospital Information Systems, Telemedicine, e-Health

Second semester:
Students choose one of the following specialisations:

• Ophthalmology
• Radiology
• Biomechanics
• Cognitive Robotics
• Bioelectromagnetism
• Biosignal Instrumentation

Third semester:

• Master's thesis

Participants of the double-degree programme with UTM spend the second and third semesters (11 months) or only the third semester (seven months) at UTM.

Participants of the double-degree programme with PUCP spend the third semester at PUCP.

No tuition fees

Approx. 275 EUR per semester (including a train ticket and reduced prices in the university canteen and cafeterias)

Approx. 860 EUR per month (including apartment rent)

Applicants have to apply for the regular Master's course of study in Biomedical Engineering at TU Ilmenau. A Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering (or equivalent) with at least seven semesters (210 CP) is required.

Foreign applicants for the regular Master's programme at TU Ilmenau must provide proof of their German language skills. The B1 CEFR language level is the minimum requirement for applying to the programme. The C1 CEFR language level is the minimum requirement for enrolling. Applicants for the double-degree programme with UTM must also provide proof of their English skills: at least TOEFL 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 78 (Internet-based), or IELTS 6.0 band certificate.

Applicants for the double-degree programme with PUCP must also provide proof of their Spanish skills: level B1 at time of application and level B2 at the time of starting in Peru.

Temporary jobs are available at local enterprises. In some departments of TU Ilmenau, students are regularly employed as scientific assistants.

Various student dormitories are available on campus. Rent for the residences ranges from 220 EUR – 412 EUR per room per month, depending on the type of accommodation. Advance registration is required via the Studierendenwerk Thüringen administrative office.
