In the Master's programme in "Sustainability Transformation in Engineering and Management", you will learn to recognise sustainability-relevant fields of action in various industries and to develop innovative technical or entrepreneurial solutions.

With your interdisciplinary qualifications, you will be able to conceive sustainability strategies, to implement and communicate effectively, and to enable a constructive dialogue between decision makers and stakeholders.

Design a future worth living by actively promoting positive changes in companies, NGOs and vein areas.

The programme is structured around four thematic pillars:

• Sustainable Engineering
• Sustainable Economy and Management and
• Transformation and Innovation

Purchase and deepen comprehensive specialist knowledge and interdisciplinary approaches to achieve sustainability goals based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS). You will learn how to integrate technical, economic and social aspects through systemic thinking and develop innovative solutions for the challenges of the future. Through practical projects and interdisciplinary teamwork, you will gain valuable competencies in transformation processes in the sense of the challenge-based learning. Our key sustainability transformation fields are:

Through challenge-based learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global engagement, you gain a well-rounded skill set that prepares you to become a change-maker in diverse professional settings.

As graduates, you will bring your gathered experience from the processing of the challenges directly in companies, organisations and NGOs in order to actively act as a designer of change in the global sustainability debate.

STEM – Sustainability Transformation in Engineering and Management (MSc)

This interdisciplinary Master’s programme combines sustainability, engineering, and management with challenge-based learning and real-world collaboration.

Over four semesters, students work on interdisciplinary cooperation projects and build expertise across four thematic pillars:

1. Sustainability and Society (compulsory in every semester)

2. Sustainable Engineering (elective)

3. Sustainable Economy and Management (elective)

4. Transformation and Innovation (compulsory in every semester)

The curriculum offers a flexible structure. While columns one and four and the project work are mandatory, students choose elective courses from columns two and three based on their interests and disciplinary background. The programme concludes with a Master’s thesis in cooperation with external partners.

Interested students can complete a voluntary semester abroad.

Cooperation with companies and other organisations is supported by the integrated interdisciplinary projects and students have the possibility to complete their thesis in cooperation with a company or organisation.

No tuition fees

The semester contribution amounts to approx. 335 EUR per semester. This gives students access to free regional public transportation. It also includes certain discounts such as for the following: university cafeterias, a local outdoor pool, city theatre and a bike rental system. Possible costs of living per month:

• Rent (fully furnished room in a student hall of residence or a private shared flat): approx. 300 EUR to 400 EUR per month, a one-time deposit for your room is approx. 250 EUR
• Semester contribution fee per semester (including free public transport): approx. 315 EUR
• Health insurance: 90 EUR to 125 EUR
• Groceries: approx. 170 EUR

Overall, you have to provide at least 934 EUR per month (since 1 January 2023) or have proof of a blocked account (11,208 EUR) for the extension of your residence permit.

Admissions are limited.

Admission to the Master's programme in "Sustainability Transformation in Engineering and Management" is subject to the following requirements: evidence of a first professionally qualifying university degree in an engineering, technical, economic or social science subject with a standard duration of six semesters (180 CP).

An application is required, including:

A filled out "application for admission for the Master's degree in Sustainability Transformation in Engineering and Management" via the THM portal.

Proof of the first professional qualifying university degree through:

1. Graduation certificate
2. Diploma supplement and
3. Transcript of records or comparable evidence

Certificates for a preliminary admission

• All services provided in the first professional qualification (at least 80% of the CP must already be acquired)
• Evidence of the conclusion must be provided within the enrolment period.

Documents must be issued in German or English. For documents in another language, an officially recognised translation must be obtained into German or English and submitted with the original documents. If documents are issued in English, these documents are examined by the admission commission.

• Evidence of sufficient knowledge of English on the level B2 of the European reference framework for languages, usually proven by the Cambridge First Certificate, the TOEFL test, TOEIC test or IELTS test
• Proof of knowledge of German at level A1 of the European framework for languages ​​(international applicants)

Experience shows that demand for accommodation is highest at the beginning of each semester (April, October), so you should start looking for accommodation around the end of the previous semester (February, July) if possible.

The Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM) is the one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany and the largest in the state of Hesse. It has its roots in the centre of Hesse and thus has particularly strong ties to partners in the region (e.g. companies, municipalities).
