Description
Shape the future of businesses with cutting-edge expertise in innovative biotechnologies
Increasing social interest in sustainability-oriented business, changes in consumer behaviour toward renewable and regenerative products, political agreements and regulations with stricter environmental and climate targets have created a market where companies are now, more than ever, in demand to master the technological change toward climate-neutral and sustainable resource and technology management.
This structural change requires specialists with a business education based on sustainable concepts as well as knowledge in energy and process technology, biotechnology, and material sciences in order to be able to redesign internal company production processes towards resource-saving and sustainable supply chains. This also includes approaches to circular economy. The aim is to develop holistic approaches for the comprehensive use of renewable raw materials and waste and to be able to evaluate and optimise these in terms of their benefits. In addition, a global perspective is necessary, since companies are in international competition and should be enabled to contribute to the achievement of global sustainability goals.
Professors, researchers, and students focus on the use of renewable resources and the development of sustainable technologies as well as on their economic implementation. The focus of their work is research and teaching on cultivation, chemical-material use, and energy recovery as well as on economic aspects related to the production, marketing, and use of renewable raw materials.
The interdisciplinary Master’s programme in Sustainable Management and Technology bridges the gap between business and technical areas of enterprise. Additionally, it trains the leaders of tomorrow’s sustainable economy to understand and shape entrepreneurial developments and their impact on society and the economy in the necessary depth and complexity.

Course organisation
The Sustainable Management and Technology Master’s programme is offered with two options for specialisation: Major in Biotechnology and Material Sciences and Major in Sustainable Management. Each major is divided into four areas: Fundamentals in Sustainable Management, Electives in Management and Technology, Specialisation in Engineering and Natural Sciences and the Master’s thesis.
- In Fundamentals in Sustainable Management (30 ECTS), students gain in-depth knowledge in the areas of economics, sustainability, and research methodology.
- Electives in Management and Technology include modules from the fields of social sciences, economics, engineering, and natural sciences. Here, students can expand their knowledge in these areas and sharpen their skills profile. In addition, students can also choose a project study. This creates the opportunity to transfer theoretical knowledge into practice in engineering and science-related companies. For the major in Biotechnology and Material Sciences, at least 30 ECTS, for the major in Sustainable Management at least 45 ECTS are required in this area.
- In the elective area Specialisation in Engineering and Natural Sciences, the technical and scientific fundamentals along the value chains up to the utilisation of residual materials are taught. Students gain and expand knowledge from the field of key technologies in sustainable chemistry and energy management, biotechnology, material sciences and digitalisation. Training in various disciplines creates a link between scientific and engineering fundamentals and management decisions. For the major in Biotechnology and Material Sciences, at least 30 ECTS, for the major in Sustainable Management at least 15 ECTS are required in this field.
- Master’s thesis (30 ECTS)

About us
Technical University of Munich
The TUM Straubing campus is part of the Technical University Munich (TUM). TUM is one of Europe’s leading research universities, with around 600 professors, 45,000 students, and 11,000 academic and non-academic staff. The focus areas of TUM are engineering sciences, natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, combined with social sciences and economics.
TUM was one of the first universities in Germany to be awarded the title “University of Excellence” and secured this title for the third time in a row in 2019. Due to its high academic standard, the university also regularly occupies top positions among the best German universities in international rankings. With its focus on entrepreneurship, TUM aims to promote talents and to create value for society. The university also forges strong links with companies and scientific institutions across the world.
The development of sustainable technologies on the one hand and their economic implementation on the other – these are the two major topics that the TUM Straubing campus brings together as the so-called “Integrative Research Center” of the Technical University Munich. This requires scientifically and technically trained specialists, chemists, biotechnologists and engineers who also have a broad understanding of the economic and social interrelationships, or economists who understand the language of the technicians. Based on this approach, research and teaching capacities in Straubing are being systematically expanded.
TUM is represented in Germany with campuses in Munich, Heilbronn, Garching, Weihenstephan, and Straubing as well as worldwide with the TUM Asia campus in Singapore and offices in Beijing, Brussels, Cairo, Mumbai, San Francisco, and São Paulo.
