Epidemiology plays an important role both in population medicine and public health, providing valuable data and insights for understanding health trends and making evidence-based decisions. It is a scientific discipline that is increasingly in demand in clinical, industrial and policy settings. Epidemiology is characterised by a well-established set of principles and methods for applied research. The ultimate goal of epidemiology is to improve health.

Target audience

This Master's programme is an excellent choice for students and professionals in the fields of human medicine, veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, nursing and health sciences, social sciences, natural sciences, and computer science.

Objectives

Course organisation

  • The study programme in Mainz follows a modular structure, with theoretical and practical training in three core modules from mid-October to the end of March. Elective modules are designed to specialise in one of the following areas “Population Studies” or “Clinical Research”. Postgraduate students are required to take four elective modules. 
  • Due to its modular structure, the postgraduate Master's programme (60 ECTS) can be completed while holding a job. Please note: The first semester has a high workload. It offers an in-depth scientific education in epidemiology and biostatistics for (junior) scientists from the fields of medicine and the natural and social sciences.

The Master's programme in Mainz offers students the opportunity to obtain a Master's degree by taking courses at different institutions of the European network and accumulating ECTS points according to the European Credit Transfer System. The additional certificate, "European Master of Science in Epidemiology", is awarded if a student achieves six ECTS points by successfully passing two courses at different partner universities outside the country of the enrolled university. Tuition fees vary depending on the regulations there.

Semester contribution

Registration as a student at Johannes Gutenberg University is not mandatory, and therefore, semester fees generally do not apply. However, for students who do register, there is a fee of approximately 350 EUR per semester. This fee includes a public transport ticket, which grants students free access to regional trains, buses, trams, and the underground across the entire region of Germany. More information

Costs of living

The cost of student housing varies between 350 EUR and 500 EUR (find more details on accommodation here). The price for a lunch on campus is around 3 to 4 EUR. The German Academic Exchange Service also offers information on the cost of living in Germany.

Academic admission requirements

Completed degree, minimum of 240 ECTS points (= four years of full-time study) in:

  • Medicine
  • Natural sciences  
  • Social sciences
  • Other speciality academic programmes

  • Higher education entrance qualification        
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in a speciality area
  • Successful completion of an aptitude test
  • Adequate English language skills
