Description

The priorities in the first semester are scientific work as well as a deeper introduction into international maritime processes. Cultural aspects, communication, safety, and organisational learning are reviewed in detail. The access to maritime technology is achieved by a deeper understanding of stability of floating devices. This is a key for safe operations.
In the second semester, the ability to analyse will be promoted by examples of complex projects. With the help of analysis models, a variety of simulations are constructed. These are evaluated commercially, logistically, and from the perspective of technology, quality, and risk. Moreover, optimising methods are presented and applied to simulation models. Here managerial aspects are always considered, and knowledge is imparted in a project-oriented way.
In the third semester, the student can expand his/her knowledge, skills, and competencies while assisting in ongoing research projects. In this context, the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Leer offers the profile Sustainable Maritime Operations, and the Stord/Haugesund University College has specialised in Offshore and Subsea Operations. Students can apply for a student exchange in this semester.
Besides specialised expertise within ship technology and maritime operations, the takeover of management duties often requires leadership skills and management techniques as well as mental maturity, self-confidence, independence, decision-making abilities, and a sense of responsibility. According to this, the International Ship Technology, Maritime Operations, and Management Master's programme also focuses on the acquisition of methodological and social competence as well as personal development. Intercultural competence is promoted during some of the courses, as well as during at least one semester at the other partner institution of the joint programme.

About us

University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer was newly founded in 2009 in the process of splitting the merged university "Fachhochschule Oldenburg/Ostfriesland/Wilhelmshaven". Originally, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer was founded in 1973 as "Fachhochschule Ostfriesland". The faculty of Maritime Studies was one of the founding departments with its roots in the middle of the 19th century, founded in 1854 as "Städtische Navigationsschule Leer". Today the university has four faculties:
Maritime Sciences, Social Work and Health, Technology, Business Studies.
At the moment, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer has 31 Bachelor's and 14 Master's study courses. Some of these courses can be studied on a part-time basis. Others are offered as online and professional courses. Four of the study courses are offered in cooperation with the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg. The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer has approx. 3,777 students (winter semester 2024/25), 474 employees, including 113 professors. The university consists of two locations. The main location is in Emden and the faculty of Maritime Sciences is in Leer. In Leer, approx. 300 students are studying in two Bachelor's programmes; one is Nautical Science and the other one is Maritime Engineering and Management.
With its varied and up-to-date programme, University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer positions itself primarily as a university of applied science in the region and for the region. Bachelor's and Master's degrees in engineering and natural sciences, nautical science, business administration, social work, and health science aim to cover current and future needs for academics in the region.
Excellent teaching and study programmes with an international profile are seen here as essential elements in the education of young scientists for a globalised knowledge-based society.
Research, technology transfer, and continuing education – particularly in our established areas of specialisation – serve to provide stimuli for new businesses and new directions in existing business and society.
