Within the last ten years, the demand for graduates in Economics with quantitative skills increased strongly. This requires a solid education in formal economic theory as well as a comprehensive education in statistics and econometrics. Taking into account the growing availability of datasets and the decisions based on these both in public authorities and companies, it is of high value to have an in-depth understanding of econometric concepts. This need is fulfilled with this study programme. The methodologically thorough education allows graduates to carry out an occupation in research institutions, international organisations, public authorities, companies and economic consulting. This quantitative and application-orientated course of economics at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf is the ideal basis for a course of study in terms of both content and creating practice-oriented contacts and other connections to the vocational world.

This programme is completely taught in English. In contrast to many other Master's programmes in Economics, it contains a compulsory area that raises both the theoretical and methodical training of students to a significantly higher level. Innovative teaching concepts as part of the "Reading Courses" and the "Economics Seminars" underscore the modern character of the course. The programme is aimed primarily at students who intend to later work in research and research-related institutions.

The programme comprises the following compulsory modules: microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, advanced econometrics, advanced economic theory and mathematics. On the one hand, this gives students access to modern economic research and thus a quick transition to a doctorate. On the other hand, it exposes students to demanding, quantitative activities in professional practice against the background of big data and digitalisation and the associated methods.

A reading course is integrated into the course of studies in order to enable students to deal critically with the latest economic research literature at an early stage. Innovative teaching concepts are also used in the key qualification (economic seminar). In this seminar, students prepare reports based on presentations of the latest research, in which they assess the strengths and weaknesses of particular publications (“Referee Reports”). The critical assessment of research results is an essential skill of scientists and therefore an important part of the programme.

No tuition fees

A semester fee of approx. 300 EUR is required upon registration/enrolment as a student or doctoral researcher. This fee covers transport by bus, tram, and regional trains within North Rhine-Westphalia for the entire semester as well as the use of student facilities.

Students or doctoral researchers should calculate monthly expenses amounting to at least 1,000 EUR in order to live in a modest way, including costs for housing, food, health insurance, semester fees, study materials, etc.

If your Bachelor's degree meets the following criteria, you are qualified for the Master's Economics programme:

• Bachelor's degree with a focus on economic science, social science, or mathematical analysis with at least 180 ECTS upon the completion of the degree course
• Knowledge of mathematics and statistics (minimum 24 ECTS)
• Knowledge of subjects related to economics (minimum 24 ECTS)
• A final grade of at least 2.5 (German grading system)
• You must have completed 75% of your undergraduate degree at the time of application. In addition, our criteria (ECTS maths/statistics, etc.) must already be fully met.
• This information must be evident from a certified edition of your transcript.

Additionally, our language requirements have to be met (see below for details).

In addition to the overall grade of the Bachelor's examination, the result of a mandatory subject-specific aptitude test will be taken into account in the admission procedure. The following aptitude tests are recognised:

• GTEBS (https://itb-academic-tests.org/en/universities/gtebs/) or
• Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) (https://www.mba.com/exams/gmat-exam) or
• Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (https://www.ets.org/gre.html).

Sufficient knowledge of the English language must be proven. The following certificates will be accepted:

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Internet-based test (IBT) with a result of at least 90 points
• or IELTS Test (general or academic) with a result of at least 5.5
• or Cambridge Test – Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
• or First Certificate in English (FCE) with a final grade of minimum B
• DAAD language certificate of the HHU Language Center with a B2 level

German language proficiency is not required!

Depending on the type of accommodation, the monthly rent in Düsseldorf usually ranges from around 500 EUR to 600 EUR for a basic apartment or a room in a shared apartment ("Wohngemeinschaft").
