The course language is English or German. The programme can be studied either completely in English or completely in German.

The Master of Science programme in physics is a research-oriented, one-year or two-year Master's programme established by the Department of Physics within the Faculty of Science at the University of Tübingen. The Department of Physics has a research focus in the areas of astronomy and astrophysics, nuclear and particle physics, astroparticle physics, condensed matter physics, quantum optics, quantum information, nanostructures and interfaces, biological and medical physics, scientific computing, and neuroscience.

EU applicants: 15 September for the following winter semester, 15 March for the following summer semester

The Master's programme is a one-year consecutive study programme following the four-year Bachelor's programme in physics (or an equivalent). The Master's programme consists of the modules "Scientific Specialisation", "Methods and Project Planning" (each with 15 credit points), and the Master's thesis (30 credit points). All three modules will normally be carried out in the working group of the supervisor of the Master's thesis.

Graduates of a three-year Bachelor's programme in physics (or an equivalent degree) can also be accepted into this Master's programme. In this case, the student has to acquire additional so-called "bridging modules" corresponding to 60 credit points at the beginning of the Master's studies. These "bridging modules" encompass modules of a field of specialisation as well as other modules from the Bachelor's programme of physics at the University of Tübingen.

Enrolment fees at the University of Tübingen are currently approx. 200 EUR per semester. This includes use of local public transport free of charge from Mondays to Fridays in the evening, at the weekend and on public holidays. In addition, students may purchase a semester ticket for unlimited use of public transport in the city of Tübingen and the surrounding area (currently approx. 150 EUR).

Estimated basic student expenses are about 950 EUR per month according to the Tübingen Student Services organisation (“Studierendenwerk”), including rent for student accommodation. Rent for private accommodation will be more expensive.

Bachelor's degree with a grade of at least 2.7 (German grading system)

Skills and knowledge in the following areas: theoretical physics (quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical physics, classical field theory) in the amount of at least 12 credits, experimental physics (astronomy and astrophysics, particle physics, atom and molecular physics, condensed matter, nano structures) in the amount of at least 18 credits, and physical practical courses in the amount of at least 9 credits

Proof of English language skills: native speaker, a Bachelor's degree from a programme conducted in English, or English level B2 CEFR (also possibly English as first language at the German "Abitur" level)

Students may find jobs as graduate research assistants for projects of the Department of Physics.

Accommodation is available through the Student Services organisation (“Studierendenwerk“) or on the private market. Rooms in student accommodation cost approx. 200 to 440 EUR per month. As Tübingen is a very attractive place to live, private accommodation is more expensive and can take some effort to find. To make sure you find a suitable place to live, you should start looking as early as possible.
