The lectures of the compulsory modules of the first four semesters are made available in English and German. The majority of these classes can be taken in English (or German); if a class is not taught in English, bilingual lecture notes and videos are provided. 

After that, lectures are usually held either in English or German. Students can choose to write their thesis in either language.

The study course combines the field of mechanical engineering with sustainability aspects. It is motivated by tremendous global changes, which are driven by the limited availability of resources, the challenges arising with man-made climate change, and the increasing complexity of interacting systems. Accordingly, technological change and a sustainable future are inseparably linked.

Our study programme offers fundamentals of engineering science and equally addresses sustainability topics in the fields of mobility and production as well as processes and energy. These are represented as specialisation areas in the curriculum. The study programme is internationally oriented, and it targets students from Germany and from abroad.

The study programme consists of the following elements: compulsory modules, specialisation modules, integrated modules and project work, an internship and the Bachelor's thesis.

The first two semesters focus on fundamentals of mechanical engineering and mathematics as well as economic, environmental and social sustainability.

In the third semester, students choose between the three specialisation areas. Each specialisation area consists of compulsory modules and a laboratory as well as a catalogue of various elective modules. The proportion of specialisation modules in comparison to fundamentals increases continuously until the end of the studies. Most of the lectures are accompanied by tutorials. The study programme ends with the completion of the Bachelor's thesis.

Across all semesters, certain credit points are reserved for courses that address topics beyond the technical field of sustainable engineering. These courses can be particularly used to improve foreign language skills.

As the studies take place in an intercultural environment, internships abroad are supported.

An internship of 10 weeks is part of the study programme, preferably in companies that combine engineering technologies with sustainability.

No tuition fees

In order to enrol at TU Braunschweig or to re-register for the coming semester, you have to pay your semester contribution (currently approx. 440 EUR).

The semester contribution for example covers your semester ticket for public transport.

By German standards, Braunschweig is not an expensive place to study. Nevertheless, you need a minimum of about 975 EUR per month to be able to study here successfully.

Admission requires a university entrance qualification and the completion of an eight-week internship during which the students obtain basic mechanics skills (if the internship can't be completed before the start of the programme, it can be deferred until the end of the fourth semester). Further admission requirements are related to language requirements and are listed below.

Required language skills in German can be proven by one of the following: German "Abitur", completion of two years of school education in German, German as a school subject in the last eight years before acquisition of the university entrance qualification or successful completion of the DSH 1, Test-DaF 4x3 or a comparable test. If the German language skills are not met at the time of the application, students can still be admitted if they prove at least basic knowledge in German language (A2 level) at the time of their enrolment. In this case, German classes must be chosen as part of the studies, and students need to fulfil the language requirements by the end of the third semester.

Required language skills in English can be proven by one of the following: a university entrance qualification in an English-speaking country, completion of two years of school education in English language, English as school subject in the last eight years before acquisition of the university entrance qualification or successful completion of an internationally recognised test as stipulated in the admission regulations.

Our first-year foundation courses are available in both English and German, giving you the option to choose the language of instruction that best suits your needs. Whether you prefer to study in English, German, or both, we offer the flexibility to accommodate your preferences. Additionally, if you feel the need to improve your proficiency in German, you can enrol in our language classes as part of your curriculum.

TU Braunschweig has a scholarship programme for excellent students ("Deutschlandstipendium"). The stipend rate is 300 EUR per month.
