Languages

The language of instruction in the first four semesters (basic studies) is English. During these first four semesters you can take voluntary German classes. After the basic studies, you need to have acquired German language skills at level B2. The courses in the main studies from the sixth semester onwards will be held in German.

Description

Civil engineers have visions of achieving sustainable infrastructure in a cost-effective, environmentally and socially responsible manner. They should also live up to their professional title of "civil engineering". This means taking responsibility for civil society by solving complex issues with sustainable methods – building, repairing or rehabilitating, e.g. tunnels, roads, bridges and much more. Why sustainable methods? Because the building sector contributes enormously to CO2 emissions – rethinking it is therefore a necessity. With sustainable and alternative building materials, effective resource management, energy-efficient building design, digital methods and new structural methods, there is enormous potential to reduce our ecological footprint.

Civil engineers are those who have mastered the mathematical, scientific and computational tools to solve problems associated with the development and maintenance of a civil society.

Are you interested? If so, the Sustainable Civil Engineering programme at the THI in Neuburg an der Donau might just be the right education for your future purpose. With your inquisitiveness and our expertise, we can develop new things and influence climate change. Take your chance!

We are aware that students from some countries face enormous challenges in getting a German student visa.

For this reason, we offer international students online lectures with cameras in the classroom and an online learning platform throughout the whole first semester.

However, the study programme in general requires in-person attendance, and exams at the end of the semester require in-person attendance.

Further details

Course organisation

First section:

  • The first part of the programme is designed as a part-time course, giving you the opportunity to bring your German language skills up to B2 level in the first four semesters by attending language courses offered by THI. This prepares you for the second part of your studies and your internship. In the technical part of your studies, you will complete classic civil engineering modules such as statics and construction. You will learn early on to develop ideas with other construction professionals in small groups. In addition, the module on sustainability in construction will introduce you to the topic of sustainable building early on in your career.

Second section:

  • In the second phase of your studies, you will take modules that deal specifically with sustainability in the construction sector. These include modules such as “Sustainable Planning and Management of Buildings and Structures,” “Sustainable Transportation Technology,” etc. You will also become familiar with the potential of sustainable construction. The “Wood Construction and Resource Management” module, for example, deals not only with the load-bearing capacity of wood, but also with reforestation to preserve the raw material. Starting in the fourth semester, individual modules are offered in German to prepare students for their internship.

Internship:

  • Your internship in the fifth semester will give you insight into professional work-life balance in a regional company of the building sector.

Final section:

  • In this part of your studies, advanced modules like Alternative Construction Methods, Digital Building Management, etc. await you. With a variety of elective modules, you can pursue your own specific interests.
At this time, you will study together with the students from the German degree programme "Nachhaltiges Bauingenieurwesen", this will enable you to improve your professional language skills further.
  • You will round off your studies with a Bachelor's thesis and receive a Bachelor of Engineering degree.

Requirements

Academic admission requirements

Requirements include a valid university entrance qualification ("Hochschulzugangsberechtigung"). This is a secondary school certificate that entitles you to study at a German university.

For applicants who obtained their higher secondary school certificate outside of Germany, uni-assist has to verify their eligibility to study in Germany and to convert school grades to the German grade system. Applicants will have to submit all required documents online to uni-assist prior to their application at THI. The process takes four to six weeks (VPD).

The Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt can only make a legally binding decision about your eligibility for your desired study programme after reviewing the documents you submit with your application. We can’t provide a definitive assessment or evaluate your chances of acceptance until we have your full application, including your educational history.

Furthermore, it is possible to find out if you’re qualified to study in Germany before applying. Detailed information is available at the following link: www.uni-assist.de/en/tools/check-university-admission.

Additionally, you can find out about the qualification requirements via the study and examination regulations (=Studien- und Prüfungsordnung = SPO). Find these on the following page under the respective statutes: https://www.thi.de/en/university/university-profile/university-management/legal-department/.

Thank you for your understanding. You are very welcome to apply, and we will check your application documents.

Financing information

Funding opportunities within the institution

There are different scholarships available to enrolled students, such as the Deutschlandstipendium. All students will have to look and apply for specific scholarships themselves! Most scholarship programmes are based on performance (grades, voluntary work, etc.) The economic situation of applicants is usually not taken into consideration. A certain level of German language skills (at least B2) is required for many scholarships.

The International Office also offers scholarships. Enrolled international students will be notified of the call once a year via the communication channels of the university.

Possibility of finding part-time employment

International students at Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) are strongly advised to start gaining practical experience early to earn money during their studies and improve their job prospects. Besides looking for working student positions, students are also encouraged to seek low-level jobs in gastronomy or similar sectors to earn money and improve their German language skills. In addition to internship positions posted on the university platform, students should actively consider research and teaching assistant roles at THI. Please note that international students face legal limits on the number of working days allowed (see Study and work).

The International Welcome Center offers workshops and events in English to help international students prepare for their entry into the German market, especially in preparing for the internship search and applications.

Important: German employers expect students to take the initiative in applying for jobs and to have a good command of German. For internships, a minimum German language level of B1/B2 is required, while for entry-level jobs after graduation, B2/C1 is generally expected. Therefore, international students should start learning German as early as possible to increase their employability.

About us

Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt

Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt (THI) is an institution that specialises in business and technology and is characterised by innovative study concepts and modern facilities. We are currently training over 8,000 students in more than 70 study programmes in engineering, computer science, business, life sciences and sustainability.
Our students will graduate as sought-after specialists and managers. An extremely dynamic and successful region with a distinctly strong economic structure provides for excellent framework conditions. The relatively small student body guarantees individual guidance, a familial atmosphere, and close cooperation between students and professors.
One of the core features of studying at our university is its orientation towards practical application. Internships and projects, as well as continuous cooperation with regional companies, are fundamental components of every study programme.
The Ingolstadt campus was completed in 1999, and a new tract of buildings opened in 2014. In 2021, the Neuburg campus opened its doors with its Faculty of Sustainable Infrastructure. Modern equipment and facilities create an atmosphere that adds to students' success and enjoyment. Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt is proud of its commitment to offer the highest possible level of quality in research and education. It is possible to explore Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt by visiting the interactive 360° THI campus tour.

Location

This programme is offered at Campus Neuburg. Neuburg offers a rich and beautiful baroque history. It is on the Danube, the European river flowing through the city and landscape and leaving its mark. The Danube floodplains between Ingolstadt and Neuburg are a biosphere reserve full of oxbow lakes inhabited by rare animals and plants. Neuburg within the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen is also a central player in the economic region between Eichstätt, Ingolstadt and Pfaffenhofen, centrally located between the major cities of Munich, Augsburg and, of course, Ingolstadt.
