Description

The international programme in Engineering Physics closes the gap between traditional physics and engineering education.

Biomedical Physics

Providing basic foundation in anatomy and physiology, the specialisation in "Biomedical Physics" goes on to emphasise on modern methods in medical radiation applications such as radiotherapy, nuclear medicine or radiology, and basics of minimal invasive therapy including micromechanical and laser assisted methods as well as other imaging techniques such as ultrasound, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, and optical tomography. Well-established medical engineering physics such as medical electronics, data and image acquisition and processing, radiation biophysics, laboratory diagnostics, and biomechanics are also covered. Training is performed in close cooperation with the Medical Centre for Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine at the Pius-Hospital Oldenburg.

Acoustics

The "Acoustics" specialisation covers audible sound as well as infrasound, ultrasound, structure-born sound and mechanical vibrations. Topics address basics of radiation and wave propagation, acoustic properties of matter, physical and technical properties of electro-acoustic transducers, and extend to numerical calculation of mechanical vibrations, advanced (speech) signal processing and machine learning, and the perception and evaluation of sound and vibrations by humans. The subjective perception of sound, binaural hearing and speech intelligibility, improved audio reproduction and virtual acoustics, sound design of products and vehicles are fields of research in Oldenburg.

Laser & Optics

Laser technology and optics are key technologies of the 21st century. Fibre optic networks for data transmission, optical data carriers, lithography for the production of microchips are examples. Optical diagnostics are indispensable in medicine and environmental technology. Lasers are a tool for cutting, welding, drilling, perforating, and marking.

Renewable Energy

Education in the field of Renewable Energy (RE) is strongly correlated with models of the future energy supply. RE research and education at the University of Oldenburg is focused on physical, technical, ICT, and economic issues of RE power generation and its system integration. Furthermore, there is a broad range of research in the field of wind energy physics: wind energy systems, turbulence, wind energy and statistics, and wind and solar energy meteorology.

Course organisation

On the one hand, the programme is rather strictly organised, and students are encouraged to reach their goals in the scheduled period of time. For instance, lectures are supported by supervised work in small groups in the tutorials. On the other hand, personal initiative and individual work are encouraged through long-term projects in the laboratory.

Engineering physics is offered by the University of Oldenburg and the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. During the first and second years, most lectures will be held in Oldenburg. There is one exception: the laboratory projects will take place partly in Emden. You will go to Emden once a week. You will receive a "Semesterticket" when you enrol, which allows you to use public transport free of charge.

Individual part-time studies are possible.

About us

University of Oldenburg

The University of Oldenburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany. The campus is only a ten-minute bike ride from the city centre and offers its 14,700 students modern lecture theatres and laboratories, two large libraries, a refectory, and good sports facilities. Founded in 1973, it grew out of the city's 200-year-old teacher training college. Today, the university includes the Departments of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities, Education, Economics, Languages, Business Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Computer Science.

The Institute of Physics (https://uol.de/en/physics) has roughly 100 scientists and a total of 600 students plus 50 PhD students. In 17 sections and institutes, topics in theoretical, experimental and applied physics are researched, from black holes to bicycles. Oldenburg is a pleasant city of 167,000 inhabitants with many historic sites, parks, pubs and an exciting cultural life.

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer was founded in 1973 as well. Students get to know their professors personally here. Learning in small groups encourages concentration, creativity and team spirit and makes it possible to apply contemporary teaching methods such as project-oriented learning. Students make friends quickly, get used to life in the small to medium-sized towns in northwestern Germany rapidly, and soon appreciate the high leisure value of living and studying near the coast.

The Emden campus is situated in the port town, roughly 70 km from Oldenburg. East Frisia is a renowned holiday area, having a unique atmosphere with lush fields, windmills and red brick houses as well as a long tradition in shipbuilding.
In addition to the Department of Technical Sciences, which houses the fields of natural sciences and electrical and mechanical engineering (https://www.hs-emden-leer.de/studierende/fachbereiche/technik), the Departments of Business Studies, Social Sciences and the Institute of Maritime Studies are available to the nearly 4,000 registered students. In all areas, practical aspects are strongly emphasised through integration in industrial projects and in-house research. This institution is proud to be home to the largest laser research centre in the greater area.

Studying – even on a tight budget
Today, many students have to get by on a tight budget. The relatively low living costs in north-western Germany make it easier to finance your studies.

Location

The university city of Oldenburg is the economic, administrative and cultural centre of the Weser-Ems area. For this area, which is as large as the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, the city of Oldenburg and its 167,000 inhabitants provide all central services and a high-quality, future-oriented infrastructure. Supraregional banks and insurance companies have their headquarters in the service metropolis of Oldenburg, and various administrative and judicial entities are located here. Major manufacturing companies have settled here. These include companies from fields like electrical engineering, small motors, micro-switches and automotive components, along with a printing company of European significance and representatives of the food industry and photo processing. The city of Oldenburg is the educational centre of the area with the University of Oldenburg, three universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulen), and more than 70 general education, vocational, professional and private schools. Oldenburg is also the centre of medical care for the north-west.

Nearly 4,000 students in the port town of Emden study in the Faculties of Social Studies, Technology or Economics. Thanks to its cultural life and traditional celebrations, Emden is a great place for young people. And the town has also made a name for itself as an industrial location, partly due to its ideal position on the coast. The town of Emden (population 50,000) lies in north-western Germany on the mouth of the river Ems, where it flows into the North Sea. Charming and with a high quality of life, traditional yet open-minded, entertaining and sporting, natural and green – that's the port town of Emden. The economic and cultural centre of East Frisia has really come into its own. Hardly any other town has so many new and forward-looking initiatives and has developed as much cultural self-confidence in recent years as Emden. A visit to the art gallery "Henri Nannen" is a must.
The region offers much more than qualified further education, because in one of Germany's loveliest tourist areas, there are lots of opportunities for active leisure pursuits.
