Description

The Master's degree programme in Global Trade Management (GTM MA) is a consecutive business administration degree with a focus on international trade and an emphasis on aspects related to foreign trade.

This degree programme qualifies graduates to take on challenging managerial roles both in Germany and abroad and offers students a broad and integrated knowledge of business and foreign trade relations.

Not only will students’ basic knowledge of business administration be consolidated, but lectures will also cover current trends in business practice and involve close partnerships with company representatives from a wide range of sectors. The latest knowledge covered in lessons centres on internationality and practical application.

Graduates are optimally prepared for a successful career in small and medium-sized enterprises as well as in international companies, associations, and organisations. Their studies combine business theory with practical orientation, an internship, and the preparation of a thesis. Lectures will be taught entirely in English, and in addition, students will optimise their intercultural skills thanks to the internationality and diversity of the course participants.

Like all other degree programmes of the department of IBA, the Global Trade Management degree offers flexibility in terms of how the programme can be completed: students can opt for the traditional programme, or alternatively, they may prefer to choose the cooperative programme (studying in cooperation with a company). The difference between both programmes can be viewed in the study plan, and you can find additional information about the cooperative degree programme here.

It is also possible to shorten the standard period of study from four semesters to three semesters by excluding the placement semester. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a Master’s degree in:

  • four semesters with 120 credit points, or
  • three semesters with 90 credit points

Integrated internships

The third semester is designed as an internship semester. It comprises a continuous period of at least 20 weeks and must be completed in a company in Germany or abroad. The goal is to apply acquired specialised business knowledge and skills as well as intercultural competencies in practice and to professionally implement them.

It is possible to shorten the standard period of study from four semesters to three semesters by excluding the placement semester. Students who have fulfilled one of the following two requirements have the option to skip the placement semester:

  • The student must provide proof of relevant professional work experience of at least one year after the successful completion of the Bachelor's degree and prior to the commencement of the Master's degree programme. This proof has to be submitted as a certificate from the employer and must include the type, duration and scope of the employment as well as the main focus of the professional activity.
  • The student must provide proof of a Bachelor's degree with at least 210 ECTS credit points.

The shortened period of study must be communicated by the time of registration for the Master’s thesis.

It is recommended to complete an internship semester, as this is where the knowledge gained can be deepened and important connections for students' future career are formed. The duration of 20 weeks ensures a comprehensive insight into the company and the work areas.
