Description
Nowadays, companies are increasingly demanding interdisciplinary and intercultural knowledge from their employees in order to be able to operate successfully in the so-called VUCA world. Universities are responding to this demand with interdisciplinary degree programmes. The university of Zwickau is also responding in this manner, with creating this double degree Master’s programme connecting the fields of management, business information systems, and applied computer science.
However, managers and IT specialists need to connect their subjects to become valuable experts for an organisation with their broad understanding of business processes and interdisciplinary thinking. Therefore, managers need to acquire and practice IT skills, such as programming or understanding ERP systems. Furthermore, computer scientists need to enhance their business and managerial skills to enhance the profitability of the company and develop market-relevant solutions.
In this context, the "Management and Information Technology" course of study is offered as a double degree programme by an international consortium between the University of Zwickau and foreign partner universities, currently: the International Black Sea University (IBSU), Tbilisi, Georgia; Kazakh-American Free University (KAFU), Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan; Armenian State University of Economics (ASUE), Yerevan, Armenia; the Kyrgyz-German Institute of Applied Informatics (INAI. kg), Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
Therefore, students will achieve a double degree from Zwickau University and one international partner university of the consortium. It is mandatory for all students to study at least one semester abroad at an international partner university of the consortium.
The composition of the consortium with partners from the Central Asian and Caucasus region came about due to the excellent and long-lasting existing relations of the University of Zwickau with these foreign universities. On the other hand, the partner countries will gain economic relevance and attractiveness for European companies, primarily through the "New Silk Road" project. However, double degree programmes between European and Central Asian universities are still rare, so WHZ is playing a pioneering role. Furthermore, as a dynamic and forward-thinking institution, we are committed to the continuous expansion of our network of partner universities and countries.
The programme is specially designed for students who enjoy travelling and discovering new languages and cultures, and thus have intercultural competencies and aspire an international career after their studies. It is specially intended to inspire people who, after graduation, want to work as managers, entrepreneurs, IT managers, software engineers, business analysts and project managers in national and international companies. Furthermore, it is possible to earn a doctorate with the degree, which for example can be done in cooperation with the partner universities.
The development and establishment of the course of study were funded by the DAAD in the framework of the HAW.International programme.

Further details
Course organisation
The double degree Master's programme consists of the three focus areas: Management, Business Information Systems and Computer Science. The programme's individual compulsory and elective modules can be assigned to these areas. For a detailed structure, follow this link and search the number "035" for the course of study: https://modulux.whz.de/en/?no_cache=1.
In the first semester, basic knowledge of the individual areas is taught. These compulsory modules comprise a quota of 20 ECTS and can be divided into the following areas: Training of Scientific and Intercultural Skills, Applied Programming Project, Risk Management and Management Control, and Business Information Systems. The aim is to create a homogeneous knowledge base of domestic and international students. The students get to know different programming languages and their specific applications. In addition, students will refresh and deepen their knowledge of the basics of management theory in combination with new knowledge in the areas of risk management and management control. Moreover students will gain the ability to combine their management and computer science knowledge and form a powerful mix of management and IT expertise through Business Information Systems, preparing them to excel in the digital economy and lead across industries as so-called business all-rounders.
In addition to the compulsory modules, two elective modules have to be studied. These are also subdivided into the main focus areas and will enable students to expand their knowledge in an interdisciplinary manner and choose specialisations. The contents range from Programming, Digitalisation, Process and Change Management, Management, and Management in a Global Context. In addition, the students' English language skills will be trained, and there will be an introduction to scientific working and writing.
Within the framework of the second semester, 15 ECTS are to be achieved in the compulsory areas of Machine Learning, Business Analytics, and Financial Management as well as 15 ECTS in elective modules. The focus is on linking management knowledge with knowledge of digitalisation influences. The elective modules will further deepen students' knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, Data Mining, Digital Business Models, and Project Management. In addition, students have the opportunity to spend a voluntary semester abroad at one of the partner universities.
The third semester encompasses the obligatory semester abroad to obtain a double degree. Following the structure of the previous semesters, students can earn 15 ECTS in compulsory courses and 15 ECTS in elective modules. Among the elective modules is an international coaching module to help students acquire practical knowledge. Students will learn about Strategic Management, Digital Business Modelling, and Software Systems, which will be supplemented by the elective modules from the first semester and individual elective modules from the partner universities.
In the fourth semester, the Master's thesis will be written, and this will be followed by lectures from experts and practitioners (Titan Talks).
