Description
Are you fascinated by languages, cultures, and literature? Our Master's programme invites you to dive into the vibrant worlds of French-, Spanish-, Italian-, and Portuguese-speaking cultures across Europe, Latin America, and Africa — while also exploring how digital tools are transforming the way we study culture.
Customise Your Academic Journey
Choose a focus that suits your interests:
- Comparative Romance Literary and Cultural Studies
- French and Francophone Studies
- Spanish and Latin American Studies
Each specialisation can be combined with an interdisciplinary profile in Digital Humanities — a future-oriented field that connects literature, culture, and digital technologies. This unique combination equips you with cutting-edge skills for analysing texts, building digital archives, or working on collaborative cultural projects.

Semester contribution
Enrolment fees at the University of Tübingen are currently about 200 EUR per semester. This includes use of local public transport free of charge on Mondays to Fridays in the evening, at weekends and on public holidays. In addition, students may purchase a semester ticket for unlimited use of public transport in the city of Tübingen and the surrounding area (currently about 150 EUR).
Costs of living
Estimated basic student expenses are about 950 EUR per month according to the Tübingen Student Services organisation (“Studierendenwerk”), including rent for student accommodation. Rent for private accommodation will be more expensive.
Requirements
Academic admission requirements
A prerequisite for admission to the Master’s programme in Romance Literary Studies is a BA degree with a minimum overall grade of 2.5 in a Romance Studies subject or in a humanities subject with a Romance-related focus, or an equivalent degree. The Examination Board decides on the equivalence of a degree.
Language requirements
During the course of study, proficiency in two Romance languages (major and minor) must be demonstrated: one at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) (major language) and the other at level B2 CEFR (minor language).
In the case of the French and Francophone Studies study profile, the major language must be French; in the case of the Spanish and Latin American Studies study profile, the major language must be Spanish. In both of these latter cases, the second Romance language may be substituted with proof of Latin proficiency, either in the form of a Latinum certificate or equivalent proof such as “Latin Knowledge for Romance Studies”.

Accommodation
Accommodation is available through the student services organisation ("Studierendenwerk") or on the private market. Rooms in student accommodation cost approx. 200 to 440 EUR per month. As Tübingen is a very attractive place to live, private accommodation is more expensive and can take some effort to find. To make sure you find a suitable place to live, you should start looking as early as possible.
We recommend you apply for student accommodation through the “Studierendenwerk” at the same time that you apply for admission to the programme (https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/halls-of-residence-tuebingen/and https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/faqs/) and send in a copy of your notification of admission as soon as you have received it. (Your application won’t be processed before the “Studierendenwerk” has received proof of your admission.) For further information, check out the “Studierendenwerk” pages on housing in Tübingen (https://www.my-stuwe.de/en/housing/housing-infos/).
