Computer Science (MSc) University of Tübingen

Courses are held in German or English. Knowledge of German is mandatory, but additional elective classes are offered in English. Participants can choose to write the Master's thesis in either language.

The Master's programme in Computer Science enables graduates to analyse, design, implement and use information technology. It broadens and deepens the specialist knowledge of the Bachelor's degree, enables students to work independently in scientific fields, lays the foundation for the further development of the subject and prepares students for a doctorate. In particular, it qualifies students for independent and managerial activities and is characterised by its scientific nature, the promotion of independence, the ability to make judgements and decisions, and its research orientation. In addition to broadening the students' knowledge, the programme also aims to deepen and specialise the students' knowledge.

The Master's programme in Computer Science lasts four semesters and offers extensive elective options. The programme consists of the specialised elective study areas in Technical Computer Science, Practical Computer Science, and Theoretical Computer Science, as well as more general elective study areas in Computer Science and the Master's thesis. In the study areas of Technical Computer Science, Practical Computer Science, and Theoretical Computer Science, a broad spectrum of specialised knowledge is taught. In the general study areas in Computer Science, students can focus on advanced topics in Computer Science, but they can also take some advanced Bachelor's courses to fill potential knowledge gaps. Furthermore, students can also do a research internship as part of the programme. Finally, during the Master's thesis, students have the possibility to deal with and address current scientific problems in various areas in Computer Science.

The study organisation of the Master's programme excels through a high degree of flexibility; the possibility to take advanced Bachelor's courses is of particular help for students who obtained their Bachelor's degree elsewhere. Furthermore, the Master's programme puts a strong emphasis on a conceptually and methodologically sound scientific education, and at the same time, it is also oriented towards careers and the work market.

Enrolment fees at the University of Tübingen are currently about 200 EUR per semester. This includes use of local public transport free of charge from Mondays to Fridays in the evening, at the weekend and on public holidays. In addition, students may purchase a semester ticket for unlimited use of public transport in the city of Tübingen and the surrounding area (currently about 150 EUR).

Estimated basic student expenses are about 950 EUR per month according to the Tübingen Student Services organisation (“Studierendenwerk”), including rent for student accommodation. Rent for private accommodation will be more expensive.

The prerequisite for studying the Master's programme in Computer Science is a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, in a related programme with essentially the same content, or in an equivalent degree with an overall grade of at least "good" (2.5) according to the German grading system.

• English language proficiency: native speaker, Bachelor's degree from a programme conducted in English, or English level B2 (also possibly English as a first language at the level of English required by the German "Abitur")
• International applicants: German language proficiency (level B2/C1)

Students may find jobs as graduate research assistants for projects of the Department of Computer Science.

Accommodation is available through the Student Services organisation (“Studierendenwerk“) or on the private market. Rooms in student accommodation cost approx. 200 to 440 EUR per month. As Tübingen is a very attractive place to live, private accommodation is more expensive and can take some effort to find. To make sure you find a suitable place to live, you should start looking as early as possible.
