The main objective of the MA European Studies is to provide a thorough understanding of Europe from a multidisciplinary perspective. Students approach Europe through the areas of history, social sciences, law, economics, literature, and culture. The programme also teaches advanced research and methodological skills and contains a (voluntary) semester abroad at one of Regensburg‘s Erasmus partner universities.

Course organisation

The programme spans four semesters, during which students must earn 120 credits. These credits come from at least 12 assessed courses (lectures and seminars), along with courses undertaken either abroad or through the stay-home option (both in the third semester), and the completion of an MA thesis. Our students will attend a class on intercultural communication. Moreover, we regularly invite international guests who come to Regensburg either to teach classes or deliver guest lectures.

Students in our programme have the opportunity to spend their third semester abroad at one of our Erasmus partner universities. Our programme currently has 15 partners all over Europe. The full list can be found on our homepage.

Academic admission requirements

Academic admission requirements include an above-average first academic degree in the humanities, the social sciences, economics, or law.

Applicants must demonstrate their aptitude for the European Studies graduate programme by successfully passing the selection procedure (see website).

Language requirements

Applicants must demonstrate an excellent command of the English language at level C1 according to the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Although all courses are in English only, it is a legal requirement of the German academic system that students without prior knowledge of the German language have to reach a level of A1+ (according to CEFR) in German by the end of their first year of study. Language courses are available at the university.

Students from EU member states and Switzerland do not need a work permit. Students from non-EU states who are registered at a German university are allowed to work 140 days per year.
Please note that almost all employers require good German language skills.

The International Office will try to assist students in finding a room in a student dormitory or on the private market. The price for a room in a student dormitory ranges from approx. 300 EUR to 450 EUR per month.
