Description
The MSc Business Chemistry at the University of Münster offers an interdisciplinary, practice-oriented education at the interface of chemistry and management.
In response to global challenges such as digitalisation, the transition to a circular economy, and evolving international markets, this programme equips students with the skills needed to drive innovation and sustainable change in the chemical industry and related sectors.
You will gain in-depth knowledge of both chemistry and modern management, enabling you to understand scientific developments and actively shape business strategies. Business chemists are uniquely positioned to identify new technologies, promote resource efficiency, and open up new markets.
Teaching is research-based and delivered by leading experts in the field. Through close cooperation with industry partners, including workshops and guest lectures, students build valuable networks and gain insights into current industrial practice. The programme prepares you for demanding roles at the interface of science and business – nationally and internationally.

Course organisation
The interdisciplinary MSc in Business Chemistry combines management, technology and chemistry modules. The programme starts with core management training in the first two semesters, covering essential topics such as innovation and technology management, sustainability, marketing, data analysis and consulting methods.
All management courses have been developed by the University of Münster's Business Chemistry Team specifically for the MSc Business Chemistry and are therefore tailored to business chemistry students' needs. Our courses are delivered by our team of business chemistry experts – we do not import generic business administration courses from other programmes. This is one of the advantages of studying business chemistry at the University of Münster.
In the third semester, you can choose between industry, start-up or science tracks. The industry pathway is an opportunity for you to apply and further develop your competencies in internships. In the start-up pathway, you can start your own science or tech venture, and you will have the opportunity to participate in an incubator programme to accelerate your entrepreneurial endeavour. In the science pathway, you will acquire new chemistry skills by choosing two advanced chemistry elective courses.
The programme concludes with the Master's thesis in the fourth semester. The thesis is an independent piece of research, which you can undertake in collaboration with a company.

International elements
- International guest lecturers
- Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s)
- Opportunities for students to work abroad
Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s) outside Germany
In the third semester, we offer three specialisation pathways that allow students to tailor their studies to their individual interests and career goals: the Industry, Start-Up, and Science pathways. Each of these pathways includes international elements or mobility options. For detailed module descriptions, please visit our curriculum webpage: https://www.uni-muenster.de/Chemie.bm/en/studium/programm/curriculum.html.
-
Industry pathway: This offers the option to complete either two separate internships or one extended internship, together totalling 30 CP. Internships can be completed abroad. Accompanying research seminars are delivered online to support international mobility.
-
Start-Up pathway: This offers the opportunity to carry out the project-based entrepreneurship module (30 CP) internationally.
-
Science pathway: This offers the possibility to complete two advanced chemistry modules (30 CP) at foreign universities and have them recognised upon return.
Integrated internships
Internships are an integral and mandatory part of the Industry pathway. In all other pathways, they are optional. Students are responsible for independently securing their internships, though they receive guidance and support from the programme team.
