REMENA is an international English-language double degree MSc programme of the University of Kassel (UKAS) in Germany, the University of Monastir (UM) in Tunisia, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) Hyderabad in India. Additional modules on current topics dealing with REEE were implemented in the 2020 summer semester (from March) at the University of Sfax (US) in Tunisia and in the 2021 winter semester (from September) at the German University in Cairo (GUC) in Egypt. Common supervision of Master's thesis projects at US and the GUC is also possible. Further details are published on the REMENA website.

The programme aims at building capacities to foster the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency concepts, markets and technologies worldwide. Students become familiar with institutions and cultures in Germany, Tunisia and/or India and receive first-hand advice from high-level professionals and experts in the energy sector.

In addition to the usual technical topics, REMENA focuses on economic, ecological and regulatory policy dimensions of the energy sector. National and international energy and climate policies are treated together with energy-management legislation, intercultural and language aspects. Students holding a Bachelor's degree in social or natural sciences, economics, or engineering can apply to REMENA. The programme is open to all nationalities. The REMENA double degree is granted by either UKAS and JNTU or UKAS and UM, respectively. The programme prepares the students to participate in international projects and leadership positions in the public and private energy sectors.

The programme can be started either in the summer semester in March in Kassel, Germany or in the winter semester in September in Monastir, Tunisia, or alternatively in Hyderabad, India.

The overall duration of the programme is 24 months. Six months of studies will take place in Kassel and six months of studies will take place in Hyderabad and/or Monastir. If a student starts the programme in the summer semester, the third semester (summer) can be conducted as an exchange semester at the University of Sfax. If a student starts the programme in the winter semester, the third semester (winter) can be conducted as an exchange semester at the German University in Cairo. The last six months are reserved for the Master's thesis module in Germany or any other country.

Mandatory registration fees allow students to use public transport free of charge and to eat at the university's refectories and cafeterias at reduced prices. The registration fee for the 2025/26 winter semester is approximately 390 EUR. Students in the double degree programme should be enrolled at both universities for the full duration of their studies.

In order to cover personal expenses while studying in Kassel, it is recommended that students budget around 750 to 1,000 EUR per month for accommodation, food, health insurance, books, and miscellaneous expenses.

Minimum requirements are:

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, natural sciences, economics, or social sciences
• One year of work experience in a field related to the REMENA study focus
• Highly motivated
• Fluency in English (see below)

Prospective applicants to the REMENA Master's programme are required to:

1. Have successfully completed a German six-semester Bachelor's programme in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences or engineering or hold an equivalent degree with a minimal average mark of "good" (2.5, German grading system) or a corresponding international degree; or
2. Have successfully completed a German six-semester Bachelor's programme in law, business sciences/economics or social sciences with a minimal average mark of "good" (2.5, German grading system) and have successfully passed modules of at least 10 credits in the field of mathematics, natural or engineering sciences, or hold an equivalent international degree; and
3. Provide a motivation letter and two reference letters.

Applicants must provide evidence of very good knowledge of the English language to the level of B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR. 

This evidence is waived for those applicants with English as the mother tongue, or who have completed previous studies that were completely conducted in English.

Students can apply for various part-time jobs or work as student assistants on campus. Please have a look at www.uni-kassel.de. Some departments also provide positions as tutors or working students.

International students enrolled at the University of Kassel can choose between staying at a student residence hall ("Wohnheim") or private accommodation. There are about 1,000 rooms available in the student residencies around the campus. Please have a look at https://www.studierendenwerk-kassel.de/en/wohnen/. Rent for a room varies between 200 and 350 EUR per month depending on the location and facilities. Students can choose single apartments with en-suite facilities or a shared flat with fellow students. Private furnished or unfurnished accommodation in Kassel is also available and can be found in the local paper, on flyers on campus, or on the Internet (e.g. social media).

The University of Kassel, founded in 1971, is characterised by a multi-layered competence network focused on nature, technology, art, and society. The university, with its ten faculties and its School of Art and Design, has committed itself to international cooperation and interdisciplinary research. Kassel, with approx. 200,000 inhabitants, is located at the centre of Germany, close to the Fulda River. The city offers rich cultural and economic diversity. Opera and theatres, concerts, open-air-events, famous art museums, and castles enrich the capital of the German “Fairytale Route”. Every five years, the world-famous “documenta” contemporary art exhibition turns Kassel into a cosmopolitan city. There are many parks and forests in Kassel and its surroundings where you can relax in the open air or be active. The “Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe”, Europe’s largest mountainside park, is the most famous sight in Kassel. In 2013, the park and its water cascades became a UNESCO World Culture Heritage Site. An excellent highway and railway infrastructure provides you with the means to explore other German and European cities in a fast and easy way (e.g. three hours to Berlin, Hamburg, or Munich).

Witzenhausen — where the Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences is located — is a small, typical Hessian town, some 35 km from Kassel. Approx. 1,000 students live and work here. Historic, half-timbered houses lend a unique charm to the small town, which is famous for its cherry orchards in the surrounding areas. The annual spring cherry blossom celebration is a highlight for both young and old.
