Description
The MSc in Mathematical Physics is offered jointly by the mathematics and physics departments. The choice of available courses is further enlarged by leading theorists at the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY). The Centre for Mathematical Physics (ZMP) also contributes to our active research environment.
The degree course of study is intended for graduate students holding a degree in Mathematics or Physics. It offers a research-oriented, interdisciplinary education. Depending on your individual preferences, you are free to focus more on the mathematical or physical aspects of the course of study.

Course organisation
The programme is divided into two parts. During the first year, you will obtain an enriched understanding of Physics and Mathematics by attending in-depth courses and seminars.
The second year is research-oriented, culminating in the Master's thesis. During this time, you will be integrated closely into one of the research groups at the mathematics department, the physics department, or at DESY's Theory Division.

Academic admission requirements
Academic admission requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Physics with sufficient content of both subjects, in order to ensure that students can follow courses at Master's level in both subjects from day one. Your proficiency in English will be considered as proven if at least one of the following applies to you:
- You have passed a test within CEFR/TELC at level B2.
- You have passed the IELTS test with a score of at least 5.0.
- You have passed the TOEFL test with 72 credits in the internet-based test (TOEFL iBT).
- You have passed Cambridge FCE, CAE or CPE.
- You have a degree from a Bachelor's degree programme conducted in English.
- You have a high school diploma accepted at English language universities.
