Courses are offered in both English and German. It is possible to complete the degree entirely in English. However, in some specialisations, certain courses taught in German are mandatory.

Students may choose one programme specialisation from one of two concentrations:

Applicants who hold a degree from an EU member country are considered EU applicants, regardless of their nationality.

The Master's course of studies encompasses 120 ECTS credit points (CP). These 120 CP are divided among the following fields – Core Curriculum (24 CP), Professionalisation (66 CP), Master's thesis (30 CP). The Master's course of studies does not include any mandatory study modules. Instead, students arrange with their mentor individually tailored, goal-oriented course schedules within the scope of the study and examination regulations. The individual course schedules are approved by the Dean of Studies.

In the Core Curriculum, students acquire deeper knowledge of systems-oriented computer science in order to develop the professional skills to apply and expand the specialised methods of the discipline.

In terms of professionalisation, students have the opportunity to choose between Systems-Oriented Concentration and Application-Oriented Concentration tailored to their individual and professional inclinations as well as professional ambitions, and to acquire core job-specific and interdisciplinary skills.

While 48 CP are selected from Applied Computer Science or the field of specialisation in the Application-Oriented Concentration, 30 CP are selected from Applied Computer Science or the field of specialisation and at least 15 CP may be selected from the Computer Science Core in the Systems-Oriented Concentration.

Professionalisation includes an additional 12 CP key qualifications and competences as well as an elective area of 6 CP.

No tuition fees

The fees are around 400 EUR per semester. This usually includes a prepaid semester ticket, which entitles students to use regional trains in Germany free of charge as well as buses. University of Göttingen students also receive discounts or free entry to many cultural events in the city. Meals are available at reduced prices at university canteens.

The average cost of living in Göttingen is modest compared to other major university cities in Germany. Currently, expenses for accommodation, food, health insurance and books are about 850 EUR per month. Please note that fees for health insurance may vary according to age.

International students should note that it is not possible to study in Germany without sufficient financing.

As a requirement for admission to the Master's degree programme, the applicant must have completed at least a six-semester degree programme with conferral of a Bachelor's degree in a degree programme in "Computer Science", or in a closely related discipline comprising at least 180 ECTS credits. The conferral of an equivalent degree earned in a degree programme completed at a German university or a university situated in one of the Bologna signatory states also meets the requirements for admission.

As prerequisite for the appropriateness of past academic achievements, proof of at least 90 credits in computer science, applied computer science, foundations in mathematics, and foundations in natural science must be furnished. It is necessary to provide proof of at least 60 credits in computer science and applied computer science and at least 15 credits in the foundations of mathematics and natural science.

All international applicants are required to take an online aptitude test, which examines a wide range of topics in computer science. A few days after the end of the application period, the test and personal login credentials will be sent to all applicants via e-mail. Furthermore, all applicants who are on the shortlist for the programme will be invited to a personal interview, conducted as a video call.

English-language skills must be demonstrated by the minimum passing grade in an internationally recognised test, or by equivalent proof. The test may not be taken later than two years prior to submission of the application for admission to the Master's degree programme (date received).

The Accommodation Service of the International Office supports international students who are enrolled at the University of Göttingen in finding accommodation and serves as a point of contact for related queries. The Accommodation Service also publishes suitable offers from private landlords in Göttingen and collaborates with the Student Services ("Studierendenwerk"). As the number of available accommodation options in Göttingen is limited, it is highly recommended to contact the Accommodation Service as early as possible.

The Career Service of the university offers individual support for the job entry. Especially for international students aiming for a career entry in Germany, the Career Service provides topic-specific workshops, online learning modules, and a qualification programme.
