Courses are held in English (100%).

Participation in a German language course is optional, but we advise every student to reach an adequate language level to increase future career perspectives.

The Master's programme in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics is the study and application of large data analysis, mining and programming to reveal insights that can be used to communicate, capture and maintain intelligence for businesses and organisations.

The primary purpose of data science is to create and leverage various forms of data in order to better understand trends and phenomena.

The Master's programme complements this with highly essential professional skills.

In the first two semesters, students will implement functions in the fields of business intelligence, business analytics and data science and learn to creatively apply and develop problem-solving strategies. The courses are very practice-oriented.

The third semester is reserved for the Master's thesis and the colloquium.

Examples of technical subjects include the following: Machine Learning, Data Management, and Digitalisation and Automation.

Examples of professional topics include the following: Communication and Culture, Introduction to Data Science and Quality Management.

Examples of business subjects include the following: Business Analytics, Controlling and ERP Systems.

The programme also offers elective modules that can be included in the curriculum as electives depending on each student's interests.

In order to learn another foreign language, German language courses as well as project work are offered.

Already at the beginning of your studies, important orientation events await you within the framework of the first semester introductory week, which are intended to facilitate the start of your studies at our university. We will ensure that you have a good start to your studies and, as a university of short distances, we will be there for you personally.

Obligation to submit a health insurance declaration:
Since 1 December 2021, the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer has been using the electronic student notification procedure (SMV). Notifications of the health insurance companies can only be accepted electronically. In addition to the application, all applicants must apply for a confirmation of insurance from a statutory health insurance company, quoting our sender number, H0002194.

The programme has a total workload of 90 ECTS.

The course can be studied full time in three semesters or part time in five semesters and pursues several objectives to enhance the professional expertise of students.

The programme has a modular structure, comprising mandatory and elective modules. In general, optional modules are offered in relation to the core competencies. These optional modules vary each semester.

German language courses are offered in different levels. In small groups, each student's language level will be determined, and students will be placed in courses designed to enhance their knowledge accordingly. Participation is optional, but we highly recommend reaching an adequate language level to increase future career perspectives in Germany.

As a result of the learning activities, students are given the opportunity to learn subject-specific and general intercultural skills, as lecturers support them through activities that encourage student engagement. These include group assignments and projects where students work together in multicultural teams or from different disciplinary backgrounds or different ethnic, sociocultural, or socio-economic backgrounds.

In addition, course content includes international elements, with guest lectures, workshops, excursions or assignments with an international or intercultural focus.

Students may engage in voluntary internships in order to discover the work of industrial services in Germany. This enables students to have a practical approach to their Master's theses.

The tuition fee charged for the study programme in Business Intelligence and Data Analytics includes the official semester contribution. This covers the cost of the student union contribution and includes the "Semesterticket", a subscription-based public transport ticket for all local public transport, valid in all of Germany.

Compared to other cities in Germany, living expenses in Emden are rather low, costing approx. 250 to 450 EUR monthly.

• A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, or related natural sciences or in informatics or an equivalent degree
• At least one year of full-time work experience in a subject-related industry

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer offers quite a few scholarships aimed at all students who are already enrolled. Application for scholarships is limited and only available during a certain period of the year.

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer awards scholarships to female students to promote young female academics: fem:talent-Stipendium - Hochschule Emden/Leer (hs-emden-leer.de).

Students from non-EU countries who have a residence permit for the purpose of studying (§16b AufenthG) may be employed for up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year without the approval of the Federal Employment Agency.

This regulation does not apply to student activities, such as assistant activities at universities or activities closely related to studies. These activities can be carried out for an unlimited period of time.

If you study at our University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer,you can apply for accommodation at the local residence hall before your arrival in Emden. There is one fully-furnished student dormitory, called“Steinweg 20”. Residence halls in Emden are not managed by the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. Rather, they are managed by an independent organisation, the "Studentenwerk". Therefore, we are not in a position to guarantee an accommodation in such dorms.

Students are supported in every single step of their studies, and they work in close collaboration with the Career Service and "MyCampus" of the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer.

Thus, support is provided to students in their professional orientation and career entry. Moreover, an interdisciplinary venue is created that offers measures and events in the areas of "improving the quality of study" and "key competences".

These services include workshops, coaching and seminars, review of CVs and applications, company visits, and other relevant components to enhance external key competences.

Every semester begins with an introduction week and a welcome session. Students are introduced to the new course of study and to the events and formalities in their new study environment. There is a lot to organise and a lot to discover.

The International Office offers a buddy programme. Participating international students will receive support with initial practical questions and will get a good insight into student life and daily life in Germany.

The course of study takes place in the town of Emden (population 50,000), which is one of the locations of the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. The university is one of the biggest universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony. Today, 3,777 students study at the various faculties. Because of their coastal location, the region of East Frisia and Emden are popular holiday destinations and offers numerous cultural and recreational facilities. The cost of living is fairly low. Cities such as Hamburg or Amsterdam are within 300 km of Emden.
