The Master's degree programme in Biomedical Engineering can be studied in either the German-language or the English-language version of the programme, provided that the applicable admission requirements are met.
Description
Biomedical Engineering focuses on the research and development of innovative methods and systems for early detection, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases. In essence, it is a multidisciplinary field of engineering dedicated to creating technologies for medical applications.
The Master's programme in Biomedical Engineering aims to educate experts with a solid foundation in engineering principles, sustainable methodological skills, and a comprehensive understanding of biomedical challenges. Graduates are equipped for application-oriented roles in biomedical research, development, and industry.
The curriculum provides a comprehensive range of specialised knowledge, spanning topics such as medical device design, medical sensors and signal acquisition, electronics, biomaterials, biomechanics, medical robotics, and artificial intelligence. Skills essential for research and development, including independent experimental planning, statistical data analysis, and interpretation, are honed through numerous laboratory courses. These courses allow students to actively engage in research projects, allowing them to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical engineering topics within state-of-the-art facilities.
The Master's programme in Biomedical Engineering is accredited by Aquas eV and lasts three semesters.

Course organisation
The Master's degree programme in Biomedical Engineering can be commenced on either 1 October or 1 April (please note the application deadlines). The programme can be completed in English or in German. All courses are conducted in the chosen language, depending on the selected study option.
During the first part of the programme, students will deepen their expertise in Biomedical Engineering under the guidance of distinguished experts with extensive teaching experience. The curriculum consists of core subjects that are mandatory for all students, complemented by a broad range of elective modules. This structure allows students to tailor their studies according to their individual preferences and goals.
The second part of the programme focuses primarily on project-based practical courses, enabling students to refine their independent research and development skills in modern, well-equipped laboratories. The course of study concludes with a six-month Master's thesis. Both practical trainings and the Master’s thesis can be conducted either in university laboratories or at a local company.
Throughout the programme, students will enhance their communication and language skills, teamwork abilities, and intercultural competencies.

Requirements
Academic admission requirements
A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a minimum of 180 credit points (CrP) in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Engineering, Medical Physics, or an engineering programme with a strong focus on medicine is required. In cases where prior knowledge in specific areas is insufficient, these deficiencies may be addressed through supplementary modules, which must be completed before the commencement of the Master’s thesis.
If the qualifying Bachelor's degree comprises fewer than 210 credit points (CrP), up to 30 CrP will be assigned as additional modules. These must be completed prior to the start of the Master's thesis to achieve the total of 300 credit points required for a Master's degree.
Admission to the programme requires a minimum grade point average of 2.7 or better in the applicant's Bachelor's degree (based on the German grading scale).
Language requirements
The required language proficiency depends on the chosen programme variant:
For the English-language programme option, only a basic knowledge of German at level A1 is required, along with English proficiency at level B2.
For the German-language programme option, proficiency in German according to the DSH-2 certificate (or equivalent) is required, in addition to English proficiency at level B1.
