Description

The Consumer Science Master's programme at TUM School of Management is one of a kind in Germany. It guarantees you a unique academic experience with fellow students from many different countries and academic backgrounds. This diversity, combined with the broad curriculum of the programme, nurtures the exchange of different perspectives, fosters intercultural skills and prepares you for a successful career in an international setting.

The programme combines perspectives from a variety of disciplines, which makes it particularly challenging. You will need a sound theoretical and methodological foundation. This is provided mainly by courses during the first two semesters, preparing you for more specialised courses in your last two semesters.

The programme includes a mandatory project study module that provides you with hands-on experience in a practical, interdisciplinary environment.

After graduation, students are academically trained experts in consumer science with a focus on their specialisations. They can seek employment with a wide variety of employers, including companies, government agencies, consumer associations, research institutes, and consultancies. Students in the Consumer Science Master's programme are trained to work in European and international companies and institutions.

Course organisation

During the first two semesters, students concentrate on the methodical and theoretical basics in consumer science, such as empirical research methods and consumer behaviour.

Besides the fundamental courses, students will take the chosen specialisation as well as electives in semester one to semester three. Within the specialisation and the electives, we offer a variety of lectures, seminars, and exercise courses that allow students to shape the programme according to their own interests. A consumer-related project will complete the programme. It is recommended that students complete around 30 ECTS credits per semester.

The Master's thesis should be written in the fourth semester. Students have the opportunity to combine their thesis at TUM School of Management with an internship in a company or (market) research institution.

Requirements

Academic admission requirements

To qualify for the Master's programme in Consumer Science, applicants must fulfil the following requirements:

  1. hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Management, Economics or other Social Sciences (e.g., Sociology, Psychology, Communication Sciences or equivalent)
  2. have successfully completed modules worth at least 15 ECTS in empirical research methods, statistics, quantitative methods or mathematics
  3. submit evidence of proficiency in English during the application period

If you did not obtain your first degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) in Germany you have to apply via uni-assist in addition to TUMonline. Please also apply via TUMonline starting 1 April.

In addition, a GMAT (classic/focus) with at least 65% percentile ranking is required if you have obtained your first degree (usually a Bachelor’s degree) in China, Egypt, India, Pakistan, or Bangladesh.

Language requirements

Applicants must also be able to prove that they are proficient in the English language at the time of application. In addition to accepted English language proficiency certificates, applicants can prove their English language knowledge with a previous university degree that was taught and assessed in English entirely or at least 12 ECTS thereof, including the final thesis.

Please note that is not necessary to prove any knowledge in the German language at the time of application. However, as a foreign student, you are required to provide proof of basic German language proficiency (comparable to A1 level) by the end of the second semester.
