Description

Meeting the challenges of the future will require managers educated in integrated study programmes which transcend borders. This is why the University of Bamberg and its partner universities offer the opportunity of a joint study programme that takes into account the bi-national nature of these studies.

The Master's degree programme comprises four semesters. Students spend the first two semesters at their home institution and the last two semesters at the host institution. During their stay at the host institution, students remain enrolled at their home institution. The academic credit earned according to the double degree programme is mutually and equivalently accepted by both institutions. At the University of Bamberg, course credit and credit approval are governed by the examination regulation for the Master's degree programme. Course credit requirements and approval at the partner university are regulated by the partner universities' examination regulations. To a large extent, students can define an individual degree emphasis by selecting certain areas of focus. Students that are initially admitted in Bamberg may choose from all areas of focus.

The details of the programme recognition and choices/options as well as further details regarding the single programme are given on our homepage:

Description of other international elements

Studying abroad is an integral component of the Bamberg curriculum, aimed at cultivating important skills such as foreign language proficiency, adaptability, and intercultural competence. As a graduate of the programme, you will not only be part of an exclusive circle but also have demonstrated your commitment and motivation.

Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s) outside Germany

The degree programme comprises four semesters. Students spend the first two semesters (Master 1, Bac +4, respectively) at their home institution and the last two semesters (Master 2, Bac +5, respectively) at the host institution.

The programme details mainly depend on whether the student starts the programme in Bamberg or at the partner university. There is an overview for each programme designed to help with planning. The individual programme details are determined by the individual recognition agreement that students negotiate with the programme coordinators at both universities, based on the current versions of the studying and examination regulations applicable to the underlying programme.

Costs & requirements

Costs

Tuition fees per semester

No tuition fees

Semester contribution

Students whose home institution is Bamberg must pay a regular contribution for the administrative costs at the university (118.60 EUR per semester at present). There are no additional tuition fees during the student's stay at the host institution. A "Semesterticket" for public transport in the city of Bamberg is included (more information here).

Costs of living

Bamberg is still one of the cheaper student cities. In 2021, the average rent was 410 EUR per month (source: 22nd Social Survey of the German Studierendenwerk). Since then, rents and, above all, energy and heating costs have risen sharply, so the cost of an apartment is likely to be higher.

Requirements

Academic admission requirements

In addition to regular application materials, applicants must also provide:

  • Statement of motivation in German
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Verification of language proficiency
  • Certificate of previous academic achievement / university diploma*

Generally, one can apply for one or more degree programmes. One statement of motivation is sufficient if you are applying for more than one programme. One can adapt this statement to your preferred programme or to the application for a double degree programme in general.

  • A prerequisite for participation in a double degree programme is admission to a degree programme in Bamberg.

Admission to a double degree programme granted by the University of Bamberg is generally provisional pending admission by the partner university. This can only take place during the first year in Bamberg, since it is dependent upon other criteria (advancement of studies, not yet completed language tests, etc.)

After being selected by their home university and receiving the acceptance letter from a partner university, students are admitted to the double degree programme. Admission by a partner university is generally a formality and does not require a separate selection process. Applications to the double degree programme sent directly to a partner university will not be accepted.

* Verification of university or equivalent degree is required, including all individual marks, in accordance with §28 par. 1 no. 1 of the Examination Regulations for the Master’s degree programme in Business Administration and Management. Applicants who cannot provide a degree certificate by the deadline should include in their application verification that they have earned a minimum of 150 ECTS points. In this case, it is also necessary to provide a certificate issued by the university from which the student will receive the certificate of graduation, which will contain a fictitiously calculated average final mark, whereby the missing marks from courses not yet completed are assumed to be 4.0.

Language requirements

A German language level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is required. Dependent on the guest university, the programme requires additional language skills in the foreign language or in English.

Accommodation

Bamberg's housing market has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for private accommodations is quite high, and rent prices continue to increase. The common trend seen in many cities, and particularly in university cities, is now quite apparent in Bamberg, too.

It is thus advisable to begin looking for a flat as early as possible and to be patient, as the process can take quite a while. It also pays to check listings in the local newspaper (Fränkischer Tag), submit an announcement that you are looking for accommodation, or explore the numerous online housing portals.

About us

University of Bamberg

Since the founding of the University of Bamberg in 1647, it is the people who have been its top priority. The close proximity of students and instructors provides for excellent advisory services, personal communication and interdisciplinary studies.

The University of Bamberg, with about 11,000 students, is among Germany's medium-sized universities. The university currently offers roughly 100 programmes at the Bachelor's and Master's level.

The university’s main areas of academic focus lie in the humanities, social sciences, economics, business administration and human sciences. These are rounded out by numerous programmes in application-oriented computer science. The premises of the four faculties are concentrated in three main locations that are easily reached by bicycle or via the local network of bus routes.

One of the University of Bamberg's main strengths is its commitment to a focus on international studies. The university’s International Office maintains exchange programmes with approximately 350 universities in nearly 60 countries worldwide.

There are currently about 1,900 foreign students from 100 countries enrolled at the University of Bamberg. The range of courses offered at the university reflects this focus on international studies. Degree programmes in fields like international business administration and management, European economic studies, or the joint Master’s degree in English and American Studies all require that students spend up to one year studying abroad. Furthermore, international students receive a great deal of support outside the classroom.

In order to help visiting students from around the globe become better integrated and acquainted with daily life, the International Office organises a tandem programme that brings together local and foreign students.

The university's international guests also have the opportunity to participate in an extensive programme of excursions and events meant to present a broader experience of life in Germany, even beyond the city of Bamberg. An international "Stammtisch" provides students with the opportunity to socialise and share experiences.

Location

Located in Northern Bavaria, it is easy to travel to and from Bamberg using many different means of transport. For those travelling by car, the city can be reached from all directions via the A70 and A73 motorways. Bamberg's railway station is also a stop on the ICE line between Munich and Berlin, which means that both cities can be reached in about two and a half hours without changing trains. Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, is approximately 45 minutes away by train, and its international airport provides flights to destinations worldwide.
