Course organisation
Industrialisation topics play a particularly important role in the first part of the degree programme. The "Industry 4.0" and "Robotics / CNC machines" modules are included for this purpose. This part of the programme is particularly relevant for students who want to work in industry. Topics for which Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences is internationally renowned are also part of the Mechatronics degree programme. These include the modules "Unmanned Vehicles" and "Unmanned Vehicles Laboratory". Graduates can work internationally in these areas directly after graduation or continue their development at other research institutions.
The ongoing industrialisation (IoT / Industry 4.0) is increasingly drawing on networked knowledge from the fields of electrical engineering, electronics, mechanical engineering and computer science. These branches of knowledge are treated equally in the Mechatronics degree programme. The content of the programme is tailored to the special features of North Thuringia, a region that is characterised by a large number of small and medium-sized companies. Development teams in this region are primarily looking for employees with a broad knowledge base. This knowledge is taught during the Mechatronics degree programme.

Location
Nordhausen is located in the north of Thuringia, central Germany, on the border to Saxony-Anhalt and Lower Saxony.
Founded in April 972, Nordhausen has 46,000 inhabitants nowadays, which makes it the largest city of northern Thuringia. It is surrounded by the mountain rages Harz, Kyffhäuser and Hainleite, and the cultural landscape Eichsfeld. In April 1945, more than 70% of the city was destroyed by an allied attack during the second world war. 8,800 people lost their lives.
With the traditional industries of spirits manufacturing and tobacco processing, Nordhausen became an important economic region for many years. However the introduction of market economy caused a profound restructuring of the industries. Nowadays, Nordhausen’s industry is still characterised not only by a large spirits manufacturer but also by medium-sized craft businesses and service companies.
With the establishment of the University of Applied Sciences in 1997, smaller engineering and development companies followed.
