Our voices

I am Alexandra, and I am 23 years old. My expectations were fully met: small working groups, optimal support, very good job opportunities and the Mecklenburg Lake District right at my doorstep. What makes me so enthusiastic about this Master's programme? The high practical part is definitely indispensable, especially in the engineering field. I also enjoyed the chance to go abroad for a few weeks without a lot of organisational chaos and the personal development within a short period.

Description

Our Geomatics postgraduate degree course is a three-semester study programme at the second cycle level (Master's degree). The first two semesters are reserved for lectures and practical parts of the programme, while the last semester is dedicated to the development of the Master's thesis. The modules of the first two semesters may be grouped in Geodesy, Geoinformatics, IT, Mathematics, and "Studium Generale" (general studies) subjects. Geodesy focusses on physical geodesy, measurement technology, and land management. Geoinformatics focusses on spatial databases and spatial data infrastructures as well as imagery and remote sensing methods. In addition, fundamental knowledge is provided by modules like Higher Mathematics, Differential Geometry, or Practical Informatics.

The programme is taught in English.

Academic admission requirements

Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) – 210 credit points – in Geodesy, Surveying, Geology, Geography, Geoinformatics

Before you apply, test your knowledge: https://www.hs-nb.de/storages/hs-neubrandenburg/studiengaenge-fachbereiche/SG_GEO/Selftest_Geomatics.pdf – you will find a document with typical questions for the entrance test. Take your time, and take the test. You do not need to fill in your answers in the application. Instead, evaluate your ability to answer the questions yourself. If you have serious difficulties answering more than 50% of these questions, it does NOT make sense for you to apply for the Master's programme in Geomatics, as you lack the necessary foundational knowledge for the entry level.

Applicants from non-EU countries are almost always required to do a so-called pre-semester because of having not enough credit points (ECTS) from their Bachelor's studies. This pre-semester is offered on the premises of Hochschule Neubrandenburg every summer semester (starting in early March) and is meant to close knowledge gaps, earn missing ECTS, and prepare for the Master's level. An expert jury decides on the basis of the transcripts of all applicants whether the pre-semester is necessary. For further application details, refer to the following link: https://www.hs-nb.de/en/courses-of-study/postgraduate-courses/geodesy-and-geoinformatics-meng/application/.

Language requirements

Proficiency in the academic English language is mandatory. In the Master's level studies you will have to write English research papers that are fit for peer reviews and publishing in science magazines or conference catalogues. Applicants must provide evidence of sufficient knowledge of the English language at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as follows:

  • TOEFL 72-94
  • IELTS (5.5-6.0)
  • Cambridge Certificate (B2 First) or
  • provide evidence about a period of at least three years living in an English-speaking region, an initial tertiary qualification with English as the primary teaching language or equivalent.

Native speakers are exempt from this obligation to provide proof of language proficiency.

Language proficiency in the German language is recommended to aid day-to-day activities in Germany, but not required.

About us

Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences

Since its founding in 1991, the University of Applied Sciences in Neubrandenburg has developed into an academic centre and driving force in teaching, research, and continuing education for the region. Currently, approximately 2,000 young people study in four faculties, which offer a total of 33 Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. A practical approach is adopted towards the research and teaching that take place at our University of Applied Science.

We work in close cooperation with businesses and institutions from within our region. Each course of study includes at least one practical semester or provides varied practical work experience. Research projects help students obtain management and scientific research skills that they can put to good use in their future professions.

To help our students gain multidisciplinary key competences, we have developed additional opportunities within the context of the StudiumPlus project. We are adapting existing courses of study to modern scientific, occupation-specific and professional requirements in cooperation with regional, national, and international partners. We are also creating new courses of study as well as new and continuing education opportunities.

The University of Applied Sciences in Neubrandenburg champions the equality of men and women, and, as a family-friendly university, actively supports attempts to balance family and profession, or family and studies by creating family-friendly work and study conditions as well as a social climate that also allows students with families to pursue their studies, work, and research. Located close to the city centre and Tollense Lake, our campus includes modern seminar and laboratory facilities, a library and further service facilities, the canteen, and four halls of residence. Our university welcomes applications from German and international students as well as from our partners.
