Languages

There are elective courses – 35% of the elective courses are English and 65% of the elective courses are German. The choice is limited in English, but there are enough modules in English to complete the degree programme. Participants can choose to write their Master's theses in either language. Basic knowledge of German for administrative processes is an advantage.

Description

In this Master’s degree programme, students expand on computer science subjects of their choice, e.g. computational health informatics, knowledge based systems, data science and digital libraries, visual analytics, scientific data management, database and information systems, empirical information security, machine learning, natural language processing, software engineering, human-computer interaction, usable security and privacy, real time systems, systems and computer architecture, dependable and scalable software systems, digital education and didactics of computer science, and theoretical computer science. In addition, students can also take a subsidiary subject, several basic computer science courses, and an industrial placement. Within the Studium Generale, students can gain key transferable skills such as foreign languages, visualisation and presentation, communication skills and team skills. The degree programme concludes with the Master’s thesis in the fourth semester. As part of the Master’s degree in computer science, you can set a thematic focus in your studies. You can choose between "Data Science", "Human-Centred Computing" and "System-Related Computer Science". At the end of your studies, you will receive a corresponding certificate from the faculty. For this, you must complete at least 45 CP (without a Master's thesis) in one of the specialisations.

However, the choice is limited in the individual module groups. Currently, there are English modules in the module groups data science and digital libraries, machine learning, dependable and scalable software systems, knowledge based systems, scientific data management and natural language processing. There are enough modules in English to complete the degree programme.

Costs of living

Compared with other European countries, the cost of living in Germany is quite reasonable. The prices for food, accommodation, clothing, cultural events, etc. are basically in line with the EU average. You will need around 850 EUR a month to cover your living expenses. The largest expense will be your monthly rent. In Hannover, the rent amounts to between 300 and 500 EUR per month.

Requirements

Academic admission requirements

The prerequisite for access to the Master's degree programme "Computer Science" is a Bachelor's degree in a subject-related previous degree from a university recognised by the German Conference of Ministers of Education (see: http://anabin.kmk.org, search for "institutions").

An admissions committee decides whether the previous degree is suitable (subject-specific). You can use the following information to assess your chances of admission in advance.

For the Master's programme in Computer Science, previous studies are required:
15 ECTS-LP in Mathematics
10 ECTS-LP in Theoretical Computer Science
20 ECTS-LP in Computer Science Fundamentals
20 ECTS-LP in Advanced Computer Science

You may be admitted with the condition that you make up any missing Bachelor's modules within two semesters.

Language requirements

You have to present a German or English language certificate at C1 level. Accepted language certificates are listed here: https://www.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/luh/images/fsz/Uebersicht_akzeptierte_Sprachnachweise_an_der_LUH_01.pdf.

A certificate of an English-speaking Bachelor's degree is not accepted as proof. Access to the study programme is possible with a C1 language level in English or German. So far, rules and information options for students exist mostly in German only (such as the module catalogue or introductory events). A basic knowledge of German is therefore highly recommended.
