Master of Science in Computer Science Kiel University

The Master's programme can be fully studied in English. There are also modules in which the teaching language is German. Participants with knowledge of both languages can choose modules in both languages.

Kiel University offers a Master's degree programme in Computer Science. Lectures are held in German as well as in English. We take care to offer programmes which can be studied with proof of knowledge in one of these languages.
Our Master's programme is designed to give you high flexibility, so if you are interested in a specific module, you should contact the student adviser or the research adviser. As we do not expect you to choose the research adviser for your thesis right at the beginning of your Master's studies, it is possible to modify the programme even after you have started your Master's studies. However, it is recommended that you choose your research adviser by the beginning of the final year of your Master's studies.

The application deadline for the summer semester is 15 January. The application deadline for the winter semester is 15 July.

You may choose the elective modules in Computer Science according to the requirements outlined in our Computer Science Master's programme in English. The detailed requirements are specified in our Degree-Specific Examination Regulations (FPO) for Computer Science (one-subject, Master's programme).

All individual study programmes must consist of elective modules in computer science which have to add up to 60-65 ECTS as well as non subject specific modules which have to add up to 10-15 ECTS, a seminar of 5 ECTS as well as a project of 10 ECTS and the thesis with 30 ECTS. In total, these are 120 ECTS and a regular period of study of four semesters.

As part of the European Union's ERASMUS programme, Kiel University has entered into partnerships with many European universities. In addition, there is also co-operation with partner universities in Asia and overseas. One or more semesters abroad are therefore possible.

No tuition fees

An enrolment fee ("Einschreibgebühr") of 55 EUR is charged for the first enrolment at Kiel University. A semester contribution ("Semesterbeitrag") currently amounting to 302 EUR must be paid each semester. This covers free public transport ("landesweites Semesterticket") for trains and buses in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg, reduced lunch prices, a culture ticket and other benefits for students.

The monthly costs of living in Germany are currently at least 992 EUR per month. Please note that when applying for a visa (from countries requiring a visa) and also later in Germany when extending a residence permit, financial means in the amount of the living costs for one year (11,904 EUR) must be proven.

Admission to our Master's programme is only possible with a Bachelor's degree in computer science that is comparable to the Bachelor's degree in computer science awarded by our department.

The Bachelor's and Master's studies in Kiel are research-oriented. Therefore, Bachelor's degrees achieved outside of Kiel often lack fundamental concepts in theoretical and practical topics, such as advanced programming (beyond object-oriented concepts), mathematical foundations (especially mathematical proofs), theory of computation, and logic in computer science.

Applicants whose previous degrees do not exactly match the requirements but cover a significant portion of them may be invited to participate in an online exam to determine their suitability for the programme.

English language skills can be proven by:

• a proof of language proficiency at level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) or
• a GRE result with a score of at least 145 in Verbal Reasoning.

The city of Kiel is located directly on the Baltic Sea coast and is the capital of the northernmost German federal state, Schleswig-Holstein.
