The IDR LLM programme at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is a one-year full-time postgraduate Master’s degree in International Dispute Resolution (IDR), focusing primarily on international arbitration. This programme is taught exclusively in English, providing a unique opportunity to engage with global legal practices.

In today's interconnected world, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) methods are increasingly vital in legal practice, particularly in international contexts. Arbitration is now the preferred mechanism for resolving disputes in international trade. The IDR LLM equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to navigate the complexities of the global legal market, preparing them for successful careers in this dynamic field.

The first semester of the programme emphasises international arbitration, covering key topics such as commercial and investment arbitration. Students also undertake a course in private international law, laying a strong foundation for understanding cross-border legal issues.

In the second semester, the focus shifts to the theory and practice of ADR methods, including adjudication, mediation, and negotiation. Students will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a specific area of interest by conducting research and writing a Master’s thesis, further enhancing their expertise.

Semester contributions are included in the tuition fee.

The applicant should meet the following criteria:

• Hold a degree in law and/or admission to a jurisdiction’s Bar
• Have post-graduate work experience of at least one year, with additional consideration being given to those with experience in the field of dispute resolution
• Possess a very good command of the English language

HU follows the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The required minimum level for application is B2. A higher level of language proficiency (C1 or C2) has a positive effect on a candidate's application.

Proof of sufficient English language skills can be provided by the following language certificates:

• UNIcert® II-Certificate (minimum score of 1.3)
• UNIcert® III-Certificate (minimum score of 3.0)
• DAAD Language Certificate with four stars in all areas and no less than a C in any area
• Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
• IELTS – International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 5.5)
• TOEFL – (minimum score of 72)

A language certificate is not required in the following situations:

• Native speakers who can show that they have spent eight out of the first twelve years of their lives in a country where English is the official language
• Applicants who can provide an English language High School Diploma or English language undergraduate degree (180 ECTS or equivalent)
• Applicants who can provide proof of English-language coursework and examinations amounting to at least 20 ECTS credits (or equivalent), each of which was acquired as part of a course of study at a state or state-recognised higher education institution

Tuition fee waiver

Each year the IDR LLM grants a full or partial tuition waiver to a limited number of admitted applicants allocated on a mix of merit and need-based criteria.

To apply for a tuition fee waiver the applicant should submit a reasoned letter of approximately one page to application@idrberlin.de no later than by 31 May.
