Our voices

The binational programme was a unique opportunity for me. I was able to combine several goals: deepening my subject knowledge, obtaining an internationally recognised double degree, broadening my intercultural horizons, and gaining experience in international teams. The partnership between the two universities and the friendly atmosphere among the students are clear arguments in favour of the programme. I recommend it to anyone who wishes to work in an international environment in the future.

Description

Founded and started in 2013, more than 140 engineers from eight different engineering disciplines have enrolled so far, and more than 90 double titles (Germany + Argentina) and 30 Germany-only titles (with the Argentine titles still under way) have been awarded since then.

The aim of the course is a continuing scientific and application-related higher education based on a completed engineering degree programme. The Master's programme prepares students for a skilled occupation as an engineer in engineering management. The programme is focused on the collaboration between different engineering disciplines in the management of major international projects and the necessary management skills and methods.

Mastering the complexity of the management processes requires additional expert knowledge and excellent methodological and social skills as well as language and intercultural skills. Transferring these skills is the challenge of the Master's programme Engineering Management. The lectures of one semester are in Argentina and the lectures of another semester are in Germany. In the third semester, the Master's thesis can be written in Argentina or in Germany. Intercultural and linguistic aspects in the engineering programme are promoted, as the group of Master's students consists partly of German and Argentinian students and lecturers.

The course of study aims at applicants who hold an engineering degree in any engineering discipline (i.e. civil, industrial, electrical, chemical, IT, biomedical, food, engineering, etc.).

Further details

Course organisation

The programme comprises 90 ECTS credits and finishes with the academic degree Master of Engineering (MEng), awarded by the HBC University of Applied Sciences Biberach, and the academic degree Magister en Proyectos de Ingeniería (Mag Ing), awarded by the UNT Universidad Nacional de Tucumán.

The curriculum of the Master's programme Engineering Management is structured into the following:

  • compulsory modules in the field of business management, law, project management, and soft skills with 43 credits
  • a range of eight different elective modules in the area of applied engineering – the students choose 12 credits
  • a seminar in the field of building or infrastructure engineering with seven credits
  • the Master's thesis including the public colloquium with 28 credits in the third semester

The whole group of students is in Biberach at HBC University of Applied Sciences for the summer semester, and at UNT Universidad Nacional de Tucumán Argentinien for the winter semester. You may start with either the summer or the winter semester because the lectures are not consecutive between the two semesters. The third semester is for the Master's thesis, either in Biberach or in Tucumán.

At HBC, lectures and course work are on Wednesday to Saturday; Monday and Tuesday are lecture-free for individual studies or work.

Lectures are in German and English (Biberach) and in Spanish and English (Tucumán).

About us

Biberach University of Applied Sciences

The strength of Biberach University of Applied Sciences lies in its manageable size and correspondingly personal atmosphere. The 2,400 students, 78 professors, 205 lecturers and approximately 150 staff members stand for friendly cooperation at Biberach University. The university is aware of the potential in this small unit. Students profit from the learning and teaching conducted in small teams as well as the interdisciplinary approach to learning. Students are independent, but they are also exceptionally well looked after. The university's central facilities are also an asset to students: the computer centre, library, student's secretary and international office.

The Universidad Nacional de Tucumán is the fourth largest university in Argentina and has a total of 64,000 students. The presence of a DAAD lecturer ensures very good contact to the German universities. The Faculty of Engineering, which is responsible for this binational Master's programme, has about 11,000 students and offers all engineering careers using an 11-semester diploma programme. There are several other Master's programmes and numerous PhD programmes.

Location

Biberach an der Riss is located in the south of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Today, boasting a population of just under 32,000, the former free imperial city can look back on a remarkable history.
Today's landscape is marked by the tranquillity of a medium-sized town, but its cosmopolitanism is comparable to great cities such as Munich, Hamburg, and Berlin. Biberach is one of the centres of the region of Upper Swabia. Besides the weekly market (Wednesdays and Saturdays), famous even outside the region, the town offers a wide range of shopping facilities. The town also sets great store by culture, education, and sports.

San Miguel de Tucumán has a population of 750,000. It is the fifth largest city in Argentina and is located about 1,300 kilometres north-west of Buenos Aires. It is connected by numerous bus services to all major cities of the country as well as with neighbouring countries Chile and Bolivia. It is also the capital of the province of Tucumán, which is strongly influenced by the cultivation of citrus and sugarcane. Tucumán has many cultural facilities as well as good and affordable restaurants and bars that invite you to socialise. For weekend trips, visiting the high plateaus of the Andes in the neighbouring provinces of Catamarca and Salta and the wine regions of Valle Calchaquies is highly recommended.
The climate is subtropical. The rainy season is in mid-summer. From November to March, there are very hot temperatures, and there is a very pleasant dry season during the remaining months.
