Description

New digital technologies are giving companies more and more opportunities to capture, integrate, and analyse information. To seize opportunities such as the introduction of intelligent products, they need specialists for planning and implementing interconnected holistic IT systems. Information engineering considers the entire chain from the sensor to the IT system to the business model and is thus a significant building block in the digital transformation.

The Bachelor's programme in Information Engineering at the TUM Heilbronn campus conveys the knowledge and skills necessary to design IT systems along the entire life cycle of the resource information. It offers you the opportunity to acquire solid theoretical, practical, and technical skills in a constantly evolving field and prepares you for your role as an information engineer.

Further details

Course organisation

During the three years of study, you will be prepared to participate in the design and implementation of cyber-physical business systems across different disciplines. In addition to a strong informatics core, the programme teaches foundations of business and electrical engineering to establish speaking skills in these disciplines. You will deepen this knowledge continuously in practical exercises and project work. In the process, you will develop your social and communication skills.

In semesters one to four of the programme, you will learn about the essential concepts and principles of programming languages, algorithms and data structures, software engineering, database systems, computer networks, and cyber-physical systems. Furthermore, you will acquire knowledge in mathematical basics, like analysis, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics. You will move on to study the fundamental concepts of information systems, such as enterprise architecture management and business process management and will learn how to present a scientific seminar paper.

In semesters five to six of the programme, you will set an individual focus and choose a research area from a large pool of special courses from the fields of informatics and management. You will also apply your theoretical skills in a joint project with industry partners and complete your final thesis.

Course structure:

  • Core modules in informatics and information theory

Possibility of finding part-time employment

In general, the city of Heilbronn and the Heilbronn-Franken region are home to a large number of family businesses. Many of these specialised firms have achieved top positions in world markets from their location right here. These "hidden champions" have a high demand for employees – which means that students will have excellent job prospects already during their studies.

As an international student in Germany, you may choose to support yourself during your studies by finding a job. Depending on the type of visa you hold and the length of your programme (i.e. summer versus semester/year), you will be eligible to work a maximum of 120 days per year or part-time work for 240 days per year. In addition, you can work as a student assistant ("Hiwi") at the School of Computation, Information and Technology. Full-time work in the private sector is limited to 20 hours per week for students. You may work more hours during semester breaks.
