BA International Management Studies in the Baltic Sea Region (BMS) Stralsund University of Applied Sciences

BMS is taught completely in English, and learning one language from the Baltic Sea region (either Norwegian, Polish or Swedish) is also required.

Our international students study German as a foreign language.

The first four semesters of our programme introduce students to general business administration (such as accounting, economics, law and mathematics) and focus on international management theory, cross-cultural management, corporate finance, and maritime transport and sustainability in the Baltic Sea Region.

To allow students to acquire special competence and deepen their skills, they may choose majors (Management & Innovation, International Finance & Trade, Markets & Communication and German Business) in the fifth and sixth semesters.

As for languages studied, Business English is compulsory, as is one language from the Baltic Sea region – Norwegian, Polish or Swedish – and our international students study German as a foreign language. The intensive language training and the focus on intercultural skills prepare students to do business on an international scale. The theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom is deepened by study trips inside and outside Germany as well as by guest lectures from partner universities or from the business world. The modular structure of this degree course offers the flexibility to study abroad and to do the mandatory internship in the fifth, sixth or seventh semester.

One semester abroad is mandatory (either as an academic semester or as an internship). The double degree programmes with our partner universities currently give you the chance to obtain degrees from universities in the Baltic Sea region. Students in their final year write a thesis on international topics, which finalises their preparation for an international career. Your Bachelor's thesis at the end of your studies is also an entrance qualification for postgraduate programmes.

The BMS philosophy emphasises the importance of face-to-face classwork combined with state-of-the-art teaching methods, real-world case studies, group work and research.

After graduation, you are qualified to work in an international setting – either at a German company abroad or an overseas branch of a foreign company in Germany. BMS graduates work in the most diverse fields, finding jobs at production companies (electrical engineering, food processing, vehicle construction), at service companies (consulting, finance, media and IT, tourism) or in the public sector (associations, chambers of commerce, marketing companies).

The degree course of study is highly practice-oriented. From the beginning, students learn to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting. The theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom is deepened by study trips inside and outside of Germany as well as by guest lectures of business specialists, the mandatory 21-week internship, and the organisation of special events such as our annual international symposium. One semester abroad is mandatory (either as an academic semester or as an internship).

The structure of the programme can be as follows:

• Fundamentals: first semester to fourth semester
• Specialisation: fifth semester to sixth semester
• Internship: seventh semester
• Bachelor's thesis: eighth semester

The most important international elements of the degree programme are:

• English as the language of instruction: Using English prepares students for an international work environment and enhances their language proficiency.
• Mandatory field trips: These trips allow students to explore international contexts and gain practical experience abroad.
• International conferences: Participation in international conferences provides opportunities for students to engage with experts from around the world and learn about current research.
• International course content: Integrating international content into the curriculum ensures students develop a global perspective and are prepared for international challenges.

Mandatory semester abroad: An obligatory semester abroad allows students to study in another country, expand their intercultural skills, and build international networks.

A mandatory 21-week internship semester is a cornerstone of this Bachelor's degree programme, which is designed to close the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Non-EU: As of 1 January 2020, foreign students and applicants from outside the EU must present a so-called "proof of financing" corresponding to 992 EUR per month (11,904 EUR per year). The actual cost of living in Stralsund amounts to 600 - 750 EUR per month, depending on the lifestyle.

HOST regularly offers student assistant positions for which you can apply (in accordance with the regulations of your residence permit). In addition, the city and the region offer various opportunities for student jobs, especially as it is a tourist region.

As a campus university, HOST offers one of the most charming accommodation options: in a small village in Scandinavian look and feel, called "Holzhausen", located on campus – just a few steps from the Mensa (Cafeteria) and the faculties.

Whether in student halls of residence, a shared flat or your first own flat, this decision has to be made by you and should be made according to your own desires and available funds. Stralsund offers exceptionally good conditions and is not affected by overly expensive rental prices and a highly competitive property market like in other study locations and cities.

The University of Applied Sciences Stralsund (HOST) is a young and innovative campus university. With its modern facilities, an excellent supervision ratio and its top location directly on the Baltic Sea, the University of Applied Sciences Stralsund offers optimal conditions for study, research and living.

The campus university, located directly on the Baltic Sea, offers prospective students a choice of 26 accredited Bachelor's and Master's programmes and a diploma supplementary course in German or English. As a relatively young university, which was only founded in 1991, Stralsund has many modernly equipped laboratories, lecture halls and seminar rooms, which guarantee an optimal learning environment. Moreover, the university offers on-campus living for up to 270 students within sight of the Baltic Sea.

At present, around 2,000 students from 50 countries study at the three schools of Business Studies, Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. The range of courses include both classic subjects such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Business Administration as well as new and innovative courses such as IT Security and Mobile Systems, Motorsport Engineering and Tourism Development Strategies. Nearly all courses can also be taken in the form of a dual study programme with a highly practical component. The university cooperates with numerous companies for this purpose.

Because studying is important, but it is not everything, there are various leisure activities on campus. For example, the student project teams Baltic Racing, ThaiGer-H2-Racing and MariTeam Racing develop racing cars and motorcycles at the highest level. Recently, the HOST even celebrated three European Championship titles in a row! In addition, the campus has its own gym, weight room and sports field with a wide range of sports activities, such as beach volleyball, sailing and diving.

Although the HOST is a relatively small university in north-eastern Germany, it has a broad international network. Within the framework of the Erasmus+ programme, the university has 72 partner universities throughout Europe. Those who feel that this is not enough can also spend a semester abroad at one of the many partner universities worldwide in locations such as Oman, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and many other countries.

The old Hanseatic town of Stralsund, founded in 1234, is situated in the north-east of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and it has been a university town since 1991. Stralsund's 800 historical buildings, which are classified as historical monuments and were built in different historical eras, have witnessed 770 years of the town's history, particularly the Hanseatic period. The city centres of Stralsund and Wismar were recognised by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Programme in 2002.
