STUDYING AT LEUPHANA UNIVERSITY LÜNEBURG
The Liberal Arts and Sciences programme at Leuphana University Lüneburg consists of four basic elements: the Studium Individuale major (90 ECTS credits), the minor (30 ECTS credits), the Leuphana Semester (30 ECTS credits), and the complementary studies (30 ECTS credits). The Studium Individuale major is made up of two key parts: your individual degree path and a set of core courses. These elements combine to give you the knowledge and skills you need to act decisively and thoughtfully in personal, professional, and civic life.
INDIVIDUAL PATHWAYS
The Studium Individuale allows you to study questions that you are interested in and wish to explore in depth. You will be asked to take courses from different fields and to consciously make meaningful connections across the different courses that you undertake. This is what we mean when we say that the Studium Individuale is an interdisciplinary programme.
The rationale of the Studium Individuale is, in other words, not to simply study a number of different subjects alongside each other. It is to draw together contents and approaches from different fields to explore your own questions – beyond any disciplinary confines.
THE CORE
A constitutive part of the Studium Individuale is the specifically designed academic core, the intellectual backbone of the programme. Each semester, one core course is taken. The core courses are interdisciplinary, of high intensity, and taught in English. Particular emphasis is paid to learning and practising important academic skills, such as close reading, convincing oral presentations, essay writing, and working in teams. Choosing the major in Studium Individuale entails choosing these core courses.
LEARNING TOGETHER
All of our teaching centres on our students. Classes are small, based in inquiry and discovery, and require you to play an active role in your own learning. As such, studying in the Studium Individuale is intensive and rewarding.

About us
Leuphana University Lüneburg
The Leuphana University Lüneburg emerged from the special legal mandate of the Lower Saxony state parliament to rethink university and create a model university for the Bologna Process. It is supported by a foundation under public law and sees itself as a space for freely pursuing knowledge, imagination, personal development, and social commitment. For its educational programmes, it has developed a multi-award-winning study model featuring three schools, which is still unique in Germany today. The sponsors of transdisciplinary science initiatives are the five faculties, which align with Leuphana's research priorities in the realms of education, culture, sustainability, management and entrepreneurship, and public affairs.
