All of the courses in the Economics major programme are held in English. The Leuphana Semester and the complementary studies will also be conducted completely in English. For the minor, you can choose from a variety of English-taught or German-taught subjects.

In the Bachelor of Science programme in Economics at Leuphana University Lüneburg, students combine specialist knowledge with solution-oriented thinking and responsible action. They learn to apply formal mathematical models and their graphical representation to real-world phenomena and public policy. Since a large part of economic research is empirical, students become familiar with appropriate statistical methods and software to conduct their own empirical research projects.

Leuphana University offers a modern and goal-oriented study programme. On one hand, students learn methods to independently address economic issues and qualify to participate in the scientifically grounded conception, implementation, and evaluation of economic policy strategies. On the other hand, they have the opportunity to engage with socially relevant topics beyond the main thematic focus and become familiar with different fields of knowledge. Leuphana College

In the first semester, the Bachelor of Science in Economics at Leuphana University Lüneburg comprises a series of courses that provide students with an understanding of the basic methodology of economics. The modules on mathematics, statistics, and regression methods create the methodological foundations for a sound analysis of economic issues. The mathematical and statistical knowledge makes it possible to understand the theoretical foundations in economics and to test economic theories empirically. In addition, the Introduction to Economics module presents basic economic concepts and tools like the use of economic models.

In the second and third semesters, the modules in macroeconomics and microeconomics – the cornerstones of the degree programme – present the interrelationships of economic action and enable the students to look at current economic policy problems and debates through the eyes of an economist. In addition, students come into contact with current and practical research topics. In the Economics: Education, Labour Market, Research module, students learn about the diverse professional fields open to them, among other things.

In the fourth and fifth semesters, students choose among a variety of elective courses. In doing so, they have the opportunity to deepen their interests and set thematic priorities. The electives range from monetary policy, economic policy, economic growth, and happiness research to economic analysis of law.

Students complete their Bachelor of Science in Economics with the Bachelor's thesis. Students apply the knowledge acquired during the programme to a topic of their choice. In particular, they work independently and in a scientifically sound manner.

The Economics major programme is embedded in the interdisciplinary college study model, which comprises the Leuphana Semester, a minor programme, and complementary studies. Students start their Bachelor's degree with the Leuphana Semester, which gives them the opportunity to understand the role and function of science in society. The minor programme deepens and/or supplements the major programme with another subject. In the complementary studies, students are free to pursue transdisciplinary knowledge by immersing themselves in a different field of knowledge each semester.

No tuition fees

You do not have to pay tuition fees. You only have to pay a semester contribution of approx. 390 EUR per semester (subject to change). This will entitle you to receive a "semester ticket", which covers public transport in Lüneburg and the surrounding area.

Approx. 900 EUR per month to cover personal expenses in Lüneburg:

• Accommodation: 300 to 450 EUR
• Food: 200 to 230 EUR
• Health insurance: 110 EUR
• Leisure activities, books, clothing: 80 to 250 EUR

Proof of adequate financial resources is required for the visa application.

International students with a residence permit are allowed to undertake a limited amount of paid employment (a maximum of 120 days per year, or alternatively, 240 days part time – up to four hours a day).

There are no mandatory language courses within the curriculum, but German language classes are offered throughout the semester as well as an intensive German course as part of the welcome and orientation programme.

The Leuphana University Lüneburg emerged from the special legal mandate of the Lower Saxony state parliament to rethink university and create a model university for the Bologna Process.
