Guest students may partake in university courses offered in English. Having reached German level B2, participants may switch from courses held in English to courses held in German.

In order to become a full-time student, participants must attain a recognised C1 certificate (TestDAF or TELC). Although we do not offer courses beyond B1, we support participants in finding such (fee-based) courses. Additional language courses are also offered by our university.

Description

Information management has the task of ensuring the availability of the production factor of information. Information managers provide this service in companies in the industrial and service sectors, in academic libraries and in internet agencies. In the Bachelor's degree programme, you will learn the methods and specialised knowledge of information work in a practice-oriented manner. Examples of this include the construction of databases, electronic publishing and the use of software for researching, preparing and evaluating information. Knowledge of applied computer science and the professional use of modern information technology are an important part of your future job profile. Courses on business management and on knowledge management as well as training in communication skills complement your educational content.

The degree course stands for a high degree of practical orientation. Practical exercises complement lectures and seminars. Project work, excursions and lectures by external lecturers from the field ensure a connection to current developments in the industry. The two internships are also an important component. They contribute significantly to preparing you for your future professional field of activity and give you a realistic picture of professional reality.

Further details

Course organisation

Introductory bilingual phase:
International participants enrol as guest students. They begin their studies by taking university courses in English alongside intensive language courses to reach academic proficiency in German. Once they have reached B2 level, students switch to degree-relevant courses in German.

Full-time student status:
Upon reaching level C1 proficiency, students may apply via uni-assist to become full-time students in our degree programme. They can then have their previously attended lectures recognised and integrated with equivalent modules in the degree programme, potentially reducing the duration of their studies significantly.

The subsequent Bachelor’s full degree programme is taught in German and divided into two study sections. In the first study phase, the study programme provides students with basic skills for the broad professional field of information management, mainly in the form of compulsory courses. This involves the development of theoretical and practical basic knowledge in the professional management of information held on various media. A considerable part of the first phase of studies comprises the acquisition of knowledge of applied computer science, especially concerning programming and databases. In addition, knowledge in the field of information research and information retrieval is taught, and general basic courses are offered. Afterwards, students begin to specialise in topics such as data science, web information management, or library science.

Integrated/optional study abroad unit(s) outside Germany

The Bachelor's programme in Information Management comprises two internship phases, which occur in the fourth and seventh semester. Both internships can optionally be replaced by study semesters or internships abroad. The university's International Office supports students in finding a suitable foreign university, e.g. from the broad range of partner universities.

Integrated internships

Important components of the Bachelor's programme in Information Management are the two internship phases, which occur in the fourth and seventh semester. The professionally relevant activities in a company or a public institution should contribute significantly to preparing students for their future professional field of activity. Students get a realistic idea of the professional reality as well as the possibilities, limits and problems of the desired professional field. Through their own observation and guided cooperation, they get to know the essential tasks and activities of their future professional field. In addition, students build up in-depth practical knowledge and skills during the internship phases.

During the internship phases, students are supervised in a professional manner. After the completion, students reflect on the activities they have carried out during the internship. In particular, they prepare a report and present their internship position to interested students of all semesters in a colloquium.

Due to the close connection between the internship phases and the competences acquired during the course of study, professional experience gained by students prior to their studies cannot be recognised.

The first internship phase lasts 22 weeks (in the fourth semester), and the second phase lasts 11 weeks (in the seventh semester). The practical activities of the second internship phase can be linked to the topic of the Bachelor's thesis, which is designed to take nine weeks.
