Guest students may partake in university courses offered in English. Once you have reached German level B2, participants may switch from courses held in English to courses held in German.
In order to become a full-time student, participants must attain a recognised C1 certificate (TestDAF or TELC). Although we do not offer courses beyond B1, we support participants in finding such (fee-based) courses. Additional language courses are also offered by our university.

The "Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering" degree programme addresses current and future challenges related to sustainability, bioeconomy, food, environmental and resource protection, product quality and safety, and digital transformation. We impart the practical and scientific know-how required to apply these future technologies precisely.
Our goal is to train engineers both in accordance with the technical and technological requirements and needs of the relevant industry and with economic and ecological competence. The programme therefore focuses on technological and scientific knowledge and teaches skills for resource-efficient optimisation of the overall system of environment, people, and production.
You will learn about the integration of the entire value chain, from a wide variety of raw materials to the biotechnological production of high-quality products for the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors, and the sustainable use of the resulting by-product streams. Environmental requirements for keeping water, soil, and air clean, as well as the use of renewable energies in production processes, play a particularly important role.
Knowledge, skills, and methods required for your professional activity are taught in an application-oriented manner. The degree programme is structured in a mixture of lectures, seminars, exercises, case studies, and internships. Study programme projects and practice phases aim to promote interdisciplinary thinking and social competence. You will be able to independently expand already acquired knowledge and transfer the knowledge into practice to develop solutions for complex and business-related problems.
A pleasant learning atmosphere, small learning groups, and personal contact between teachers and students characterise the study programme.
After graduation, a broad professional field is open to you. Our graduates work in the areas of bioresource producing and processing industry, in plant engineering, authorities, or organisations and hold positions such as developers, project engineers, or group and department managers.

Course organisation
Introductory bilingual phase:
International participants enrol as guest students. This entry phase for approximately two semesters consists of basic scientific subjects necessary in engineering science, e.g. English lectures in mathematics, computer science, and statistics, plus German language classes. Once they have reached B2 level, students switch to degree-relevant courses in German.
Full-time student status:
Upon reaching level C1 proficiency, students may apply via uni-assist to become full-time students in our degree programme. They can then have their previously attended lectures recognised and integrated with equivalent modules in the degree programme, potentially reducing the duration of their studies significantly.
The subsequent Bachelor’s degree programme is taught in German and divided into two study sections. In the first study section, which takes place in the first and second semesters, students learn the fundamentals of science, engineering and business administration. In the following study phase, which takes place in the third to seventh semesters, students will be taught subject-specific, theoretical, and practical knowledge. A practical phase and project work in the fifth semester are integrated into the study programme. Optionally, students can complete a semester of study abroad. An additional practical phase and the subsequent Bachelor's thesis make up the final semester. Students can complete practical phases in national or international companies. Therefore, a stay abroad can be easily integrated into the degree programme.

Integrated internships
Intensive internship phases are a particular advantage of the Bachelor’s degree programme. They comprise a 22-week internship (practice phase followed by project work) in the fifth semester and an 11-week practice phase in the seventh semester. Subsequently, students can write the Bachelor's thesis on a topic of practical relevance in cooperation with a company within nine weeks. Extensive project work, excursions and seminars by distinguished guest lecturers from the industry enable students to participate directly in current developments in the technology of renewable raw materials.
