English (first to fourth semesters) and German (partially in the third semester and fourth semester, completely in the fifth to eighth semesters)

The Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering/Elektrotechnik is an engineering course of study with a practical orientation. Due to a specially tailored core curriculum, it is suitable for students who lack the language requirements for a German-speaking course at the beginning of their studies.

The programme is mainly derived from the German-speaking Bachelor's programme in electrical engineering. However, the first semesters have been modified in the form of a "study adapter", in which the technical content of the first two semesters is stretched over four semesters. This reduces the workload and provides students with time for intense German language studies.

During the first two semesters, the courses are completely held in English. In the third and fourth semesters, the language is partly shifted to German. Starting in the fifth semester (main course), the course language is almost completely in German.

During the course of study, the students gain knowledge of a broad field of disciplines required for electrical engineering, e.g., Electrical Engineering Fundamentals, Computer Science, Material Engineering, Mathematics, Technical Physics, Electronics, Electronics Design and Technology, System Theory/Control Theory, Measurement Engineering, Digital Systems, Industrial Control, Power Electronics, Computer Aided Design, Fundamentals of Microprocessors, Signals and Systems, Electrical Actuators, System Design with Programmable Circuits, Electric Power Supply, Electromagnetic Compatibility, Electronic Packaging, and Microsystems as well as Business Management/Engineering Law. Additionally, in the main course of study, several mandatory modules that consist of electives must be chosen from the different fields of specialisation in electrical engineering.

The modules are set up in a method-oriented way. In the modules, competencies are taught regarding the application of methods of analysis, design, dimensioning, calculation, measurement, and inspection. Numerous product-oriented modules aim to make the education both broad and applicable.

The first year is taught in English. The second year is mainly taught in English with selected courses taught in German (foundation courses). In the first and second years, the Bachelor's programme is organised to be part time. This allows for intensive courses in German, which are provided by the HTWD. The main courses in the third and fourth years are in German. In the last semester, students will be occupied with an industrial work placement and the final project (Bachelor's thesis in German or English).
Guidance and counselling will be offered by mentors, and support services will be offered by tutors. The programme is organised in separate modules.

There is an internship in the last (eighth) semester that can be combined with the Bachelor's thesis. This can be completed as an in-company project.

No tuition fees

Approx. 300 EUR per semester. The fee includes a semester ticket for public transportation in Germany and student services.

The cost of living amounts to approx. 850 to 950 EUR per month to cover personal expenses. This includes accommodation at a cost of 300 to 350 EUR per month.

Students are required to have English language proficiency at least at a level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). We accept the following examinations (among others):

• TOEFL Internet-based (iBT) at least 80 points
• IELTS (International English Language Testing System) at least Band 6.0
• Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), or
• Cambridge English (ESOL)

The university has a scholarship programme for excellent students (Deutschlandstipendium). Recipients receive approx. 300 EUR per month.

Dresden is a centre for the electrical and electronic industries. There are job opportunities for students and for graduates. The Career Service at HTWD supports international students when applying and searching for jobs. During the semester breaks, there will be time for jobs.

The Studentenwerk Dresden is responsible for student services. It offers a wide range of accommodation for students. Students can choose between small apartments for individuals, large apartments for student families, and numerous single and double rooms in flat shares. The Career Service of HTWD assists students with their job search and applications via workshops, individual consultations and coaching sessions. HTWD also has a Consulting Centre for Company Founding (HTWD Gründungsschmiede), which helps new start-ups develop a business idea, create a business plan and use work stations and infrastructure for free.

Engineering, economics, design, and "green" disciplines represent the primary focus of HTWD – University of Applied Sciences.

State-of-the-art laboratories, the university's globally connected computer network, an extensive library, and a language centre also ensure an effective and top-quality study.

The central campus is located on the southern edge of the Dresden city centre in close proximity to the main railway station and provides a relaxed social atmosphere that facilitates contact with fellow students as well as activities and social events hosted by the student council. The campus at Pillnitz is situated in the immediate vicinity of the famous Pillnitz Castle and Park. Rich in tradition and surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, this campus is home to the Faculty of Agriculture/Environment/Chemistry.

The HTWD also offers a variety of sports, musical performances, and cultural experiences.

Dresden, the capital city of the state of Saxony, is located in the Elbe river valley, one of Germany's most scenic landscapes. Dresden has all benefits of a major city and is a great base for excursions to explore the nature that surrounds the city.

The city's cultural life is diverse. Students can explore baroque buildings, the Old Master’s Gallery and treasure chambers like the Green Room. The city also offers an array of theatres, concert venues, open-air stages, clubs, party locations and festivals. Old Town street cafés purvey Mediterranean flair, whereas the modern New Town, the "Neustadt", attracts guests to its trendy bar and pub scene and is a particularly lively place to meet students and friends after class.

In addition to arts and culture, business and science shape the image of Saxony’s capital, which has become one of the top technological regions in Germany.
