Studying in Furtwangen

Furtwangen offers you 3 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

We can’t deny that Furtwangen is a bit off the beaten track. But if you appreciate fresh air, large forests, mountains and waterfalls, Furtwangen will immediately compensate you for this. You will also come into first-hand contact with neat regional traditions and quickly make new acquaintances among the many students.

Furtwangen only has around 10,000 inhabitants. The distances are easily walkable, and the atmosphere is casual. Even though there are shops, cafés and bars here, it's best to go to nearby Villingen-Schwenningen for larger errands or the occasional visit to a cinema. By bus, you have connections to the neighbouring towns and also to larger cities such as Freiburg. But if you want to be more flexible and travel more quickly, then a (rental) car is very convenient and makes your everyday life easier.

Furtwangen has one higher education institution, Hochschule Furtwangen University (HFU). It has nine departments at a total of three locations - Furtwangen, Villingen-Schwenningen and Tuttlingen. In Furtwangen itself, about 2,500 people study and together with the other locations, there are well over 4,500 students. The size of the HFU enables you to quickly find friends among your fellow students, establish a rapport with the teaching staff and focus on your strengths. At the same time, the higher education institution offers a comparatively large variety of subject areas - here you will find, for example, business, media, health sciences or technical degree programmes. Thanks to the HFU’s applied research and the high level of practical relevance in its teaching, it also enjoys a good international reputation. Speaking of internationality: the higher education institution regularly organises the International Festival, where you can get to know the home countries of your fellow international students. Culinary delights, dance, music and a lot of fun are on the agenda!

Tranquil and charming: here you are surrounded by nature.

Did you know that today's HFU began as a watchmaking school? It's not for nothing that the city is known for its artisanal watchmaking!

Many people come from all over Germany to the Black Forest to clear their heads and recharge their batteries - and you could study and live in the middle of this holiday region! Furtwangen offers many opportunities, especially for outdoor fans: in summer, for example, take a hike to the Triberg Waterfalls, one of the highest waterfalls in Germany. Or plan a trip to Lake Titisee - here you can have a refreshing swim and spend a relaxing day by the water with your friends. In winter, a lot of snow falls here - ideal conditions for skiing, tobogganing or for a magical winter hike through the snow-covered landscape.

Admittedly, you don't have the same opportunities to go out as in the big cities. But the students themselves organise plenty - private parties, barbecue evenings or spontaneous get-togethers in nature are common. For example, after class you can pack some provisions with friends and go to the Linachtalsperre reservoir - with a beautiful view, it's a pleasant way to end the evening. The city also organises a number of events. There are several venues, where you can experience new music by different artists or spend a fun evening at a cabaret. Furthermore, could you have imagined that Furtwangen also hosts a carnival season and celebrates Fasnet (Fasnacht)? The parade and the colourful disguises imbue the cold season with warmth and colour!

By the way: The city of Furtwangen offers certain locations free of charge to host pop-up stores for a limited period of time. So, if you've always wanted to try and implement a certain idea, this is the perfect opportunity to do so! This adds some variety to the city and perhaps a surprise every now and then when you're out and about.
