Studying in Emden

Emden offers you 4 degree programmes in English at 1 higher education institution.

Water defines life in Emden: the small East Frisian city is located at Dollart Bay which flows into the North Sea and is also crisscrossed by canals. So, if you like water sports, you will definitely find what you are looking for. And once you’re back ashore, you should try “Bosseln”. The East Frisian region is a stronghold of this outdoor toss game. Never heard of it? Then come to Emden!

Emden is home to the campus of the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer, which has a total of around 4,500 students. At the Emden campus, you can study degree programmes in social work and health, technology and business. The faculty places much emphasis on practical applications. Even during your studies, you can establish contacts with local companies and, of course, gain your first experience on the job. A major local employer is a German automotive group, which has an automotive cluster centered around it. But the maritime industry is also strong.

The small size of the University of Applied Sciences not only ensures that you can establish a personal connection with your lecturers and receive individual support, but your destinations are also never far away. The same applies to Emden itself. At the start of the semester, you can get a (used) bicycle - it's the best way to get around. And, of course, you can also use it to explore Ostfriesland - the German name of the East Frisia region. Beautiful seaport towns, historic villages and vast breathtaking vistas are a stone's throw away. Take a break at a dike where sheep graze, marvel at the largest shrimp cutter fleet in Ostfriesland in Greetsiel, or climb a lighthouse and enjoy the view all the way to the Dutch coast - the Campen lighthouse is ideal for this.

“Moin!” Short and to the point - that's how people greet each other here in Plattdeutsch, the dialect spoken in Ostfriesland. No wonder the locals are considered somewhat eccentric and taciturn in the rest of Germany. But that is not entirely true. The inhabitants can be just as open as the sea on their doorstep. And the people of Ostfriesland are notorious for their dry humor. One of the best-known German comedians, Otto, comes from Emden.

Culturally, Emden has a lot to offer. The Emden-Norderney International Film Festival takes place annually, the Emder Kunsthalle houses modern and contemporary art, and the Festspielhaus am Wall hosts live events such as theatre, musicals, and more.

You’ll have your share of windy and rainy days in Emden - but when it’s storming over the North Sea, you have the ideal opportunity to experience Emden's cosy side: For example, you can conduct a real Ostfriesland tea ceremony. First, you put a piece of Kluntje (sugar) in the cup, pour the tea over it and then add cream with a special spoon on the inside edge of the cup - counterclockwise (yes, this is important to the locals). This results in a Wulkje (a cloud of cream). Maybe a little different than you usually take your tea, but very comfy.

Matjes, i.e., herring, is another local specialty. Due to the long tradition of herring fishing in Emden, the city always celebrates the Matjestage in the summer. There you can not only taste many delicacies but also admire traditional ships from Germany and abroad. And in the evening, you can dance and party with live music.

Overall, Emden is rather quiet when it comes to nightlife. However, there are definitely cool locations where you can go dancing or spend a nice evening with your friends. With the semester ticket, you can travel for free on public transportation in almost the entirety of Lower Saxony. So, if you want a change of pace, you can be in Oldenburg in about an hour and party there.
