One of the great advantages of living in Detmold is the short walking distances in the city centre and to both higher education institutions. In the city, you will immediately notice half-timbered houses, places to relax and little markets providing an alternative to supermarkets. Especially during summers, students playing music while sitting on their blankets in the parks resembles perfect student life.
Detmold is in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, right next to the Teutoburg Forest, and has around 75,000 inhabitants. The city is small and has a relaxed atmosphere, however, it can still offer a varied cultural programme – it's not called the "city of culture in the Teutoburg Forest" for nothing. Along the so-called Kulturallee, you can visit various museums, exhibitions or go to concerts and theatre performances. There are also other very different events throughout the year: at the street theatre festival "Bildstörung" you can reflect on social issues. "Lippe kulinarisch" invites you to nibble on delicacies and discover other specialties.
The broad and active cultural scene is further enriched by the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, whose students also showcase their talents outside of the lecture halls. In addition to the Hochschule für Musik, the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts also has a campus in the city, the "Kreativ Campus Detmold". It offers degree programmes in construction and design (e.g. architecture, civil engineering, media or design).
