Graduates of a specialised relevant Bachelor's degree in the area of linguistics and cultural sciences with a substantial specialist module content in historical-comparative linguistics (amounting to at least 60 credit points) or proof of a comparable German or international professionally qualifying degree.

General information:
The subject of the Historical Comparative Linguistics degree course is the Indo-European language family. The aim of this discipline is to determine the relationships that exist between the languages belonging to this language family and to gain insights into the processes of differentiation that have led to the languages spoken today. Historical Comparative Linguistics focuses primarily on the earliest accessible stages of individual languages and attempts to record their linguistic evidence as accurately as possible, to describe the sound systems and grammatical structures in detail, to collect vocabulary and to determine word meanings. Words and grammatical forms are also examined in terms of their etymology.

Research focuses:
In addition to a comprehensive education in Historical Comparative Linguistics (Indo-European), Marburg also offers Anatolian Studies (Hittite Studies) and Typological Comparative Linguistics as areas of specialisation.
