In Mannheim, you will notice the city’s diversity immediately: it combines industrial areas with art nouveau buildings, a palace and a lot of greenery as well as the two rivers Rhine and Neckar. Additionally, about half of Mannheim’s population has an international background! Mannheim also impresses with its chessboard-style street grid, which is unique in Germany, and buzzing nightlife.
Mannheim is an exciting city and you can feel the city's multicultural identity and creativity especially in the trendy district of Jungbusch. The former workers' quarter, which borders the commercial port, has become a hotspot for nightlife. A hip pub and bar scene can be found next to international restaurants and near them are galleries, spaces for art events or innovative start-ups. The creative heart of the city is also home to the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg, one of the few public higher education institutions in Germany that offer degree programmes in popular music and creative management.
There are many more higher education institutions in Mannheim that also regularly pop up in international rankings. And even though Mannheim is not a typical student city like Heidelberg, for example, you can still feel the high proportion of young people in the diverse nightlife.
The housing market is relaxed if you compare it to other cities like Hamburg or Munich, but in popular neighbourhoods it can be difficult to find an affordable flat quickly. And unfortunately, rents are above the German average.
Quite unusually for a German city, the street network in Mannheim's city centre is laid out in a grid pattern. The resulting square blocks of houses have earned Mannheim the nickname "city of squares" (Quadratestadt).
