Lübeck, with its fascinating old city island, is located in the metropolitan region of Hamburg at the Lübecker Bucht (Bay of Lübeck). The historical centre is neat and characterised by many beautiful brick gothic buildings and narrow, winding streets. Small stores invite you to stroll around and also the cultural life has something to offer – from cosy restaurants and pubs to theatres and cinemas. Welcome to Lübeck!
Here you’ll study right by the sea in a city with a rich history, which is evident in the narrow streets and romantic backyards. In 1987, the entire old town of Lübeck was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city may not be one of the largest today, with a population of around 220,000, but it was once a centre of world trade - and you can certainly tell.
In addition to historical sites such as the Holstentor, the red brick city gate, and the picturesque town hall, there are many charming cafes, restaurants and bars on the Altstadtinsel, the island-shaped old town surrounded by the river Trave. If the weather is nice, you can also take a boat trip on the Trave with friends!
Lübeck has a total of almost 14,000 students, distributed e.g. among the TH Lübeck and the Universität zu Lübeck. Since the city is compact in size, you can reach your courses and leisure activities in just a few minutes on foot or by bike. Plus, the student city has a well-developed bus network and several ferry lines that get you from A to B quickly. The housing market in Lübeck is somewhat tight. Even though rents are still close to the German average, affordable living space is becoming increasingly scarce.
